Pulsed Magnet Designer Postdoc

Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, us, 87545

Job TitlePulsed Magnet Designer PostdocLocationLos Alamos, NM, USOrganization NameMPA-MAG / Materials Physics and Applications DivisionMinimum SalaryMaximum SalaryWhat You Will Do

The Pulsed Field Facility (PFF)- National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) at LANL develops,

builds and maintains the strongest pulsed magnets for scientific research.

We have an immediate opening for a postdoctoral position in design large-scale, high-field pulsed magnets.

The successful candidate, in collaboration with other computational engineering team member,

will develop and use finite element method (FEM) simulations to solve coupled, multi-engineering challenges for design large magnet systems.

The simulations will be involved in structural-thermal-electromagnetic analyses which can be developed/implemented in Fortran or a commercial software package

such as COMSOL or ANSYS. The candidate may involve in other research activities related to the development, fabrication and testing of new materials

(special conductors, reinforcing materials, cryogenic materials...) and/or components of the magnet assembly.

The PFF is located on the main LANL campus in Los Alamos, New Mexico. LANL is one of three NHMFL partner institutions,

the other two are the University of Florida, Gainesville, and Florida State University, Tallahassee.

The NHMFL is sponsored primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Materials Research,

with additional support from the State of Florida and the Department of Energy. LANL provides unique capabilities

to the PFF for the NHMFL in the form of a 1.4 GVA pulsed power system. In addition to the 100 Tesla Multi-Shot Pulsed Magnet and the

60 T Long Pulse Magnet, the NHMFL features several capacitor-driven pulsed magnets and state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities for materials science research.

The PFF supports a user facility, develops magnet technology, and advances science and technology using high magnetic fields in support of the goals and objectives of NSF and LANL.

Qualifications We Require:

Extensive experience in multi-physics FEM simulations for a large-scaled system involving structural-thermal-electromagnetic analyses

Programming skill in Fortran or experienced with commercial multiphysics FEM tool(s) such as COMSOL or ANSYS packages

Ability to work in a team environment

A record of successful scientific publication and conference presentations.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (i.e. technically and interpersonally), at various staff levels both orally and/or in writing.

Demonstrated commitment to Laboratory goals in assuring a healthy, safe and secure working environment.

Qualifications We Desire:

Beside required qualifications, research or work experience with one or more of the followings are desired:

experience Java/C++/Matlab to automate any repetitive modeling processes using the application programing interface (API)

deep knowledge on mechanical properties of different types of materials; experience with stress-strain measurements is not required but desirable

hand-on experiences in designing and construction of large-scale mechanical structure or devices

Experience with mechanical design software such as AutoCAD, Inventor

Esential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Climbing stairs, walking, lifting 20-30 pounds, working flexible hours or irregular schedule, operation of motor vehicles, work near electrical power supplies, domestic and foreign travel.

Education: Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field such as mechanical engineering, applied physics, material sciences, or applied mathematics within the last five years.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. For more information go to Postdoc Program website at https://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/index.php .

Notes to applicants: Please submit a detailed cover letter with your resume addressing all applicable required and desired skills.

Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
