Electric Distribution Designer I

OverviewNV5 is seeking an experienced electric utility designer to support our growing T&D electrical design group. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the design of electric distribution projects in both overhead and underground configurations. The candidate will possess a working knowledge of GO95 and GO128 requirements and preferably SDG&E design and construction standards and have worked in the iCUE software that SDG&E uses. The candidate should have reasonable computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Background as an electrical designer or planner with SDG&E or other comparable experience. In house experience with utility or contractor, or Associates degree or Trade School certification in engineering, drafting, or electrical design is preferred. Background as a journeyman lineman or cable splicer is a plus.

ResponsibilitiesDesign and Drafting

Create detailed electrical distribution design plans for overhead and underground systems.

Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software and other design tools to prepare plans and specifications.

Project Coordination

Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets.

Coordinate with construction crews, contractors, and other utilities to ensure project alignment and effective execution.

Field Surveys and Inspections

Conduct field surveys to gather data and assess site conditions.

Perform inspections of existing electrical distribution infrastructure and proposed project sites.

Compliance and Standards

Ensure all designs comply with utility standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

Stay updated on changes to codes, regulations, and safety standards relevant to electrical distribution systems.

Documentation and Reporting

Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to design projects.

Generate and submit design drawings, specifications, and as-built documentation as required.

Technical Support

Provide technical support and guidance to construction teams during the installation and maintenance of electrical distribution systems.

Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues that arise during project implementation.

Continuous Improvement

Participate in training programs and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Suggest and implement improvements to design processes, tools, and methodologies to increase efficiency and quality.

Safety and Risk Management

Identify and mitigate potential safety hazards and risks associated with electrical distribution designs.

Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for all project participants.

Team Collaboration

Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment, sharing knowledge and contributing to team goals.

Assist in mentoring and training junior designers or interns as needed.

Qualifications

Valid California driver’s license.

Candidate should have a working knowledge of electric utility safe work practices and be willing to work in and around underground electrical vaults (with a utility-authorized Qualified Electrical Worker).

Be physically able to access pole sites, some of them remote.

Be willing to work in high vehicle traffic areas at times, in various locations throughout San Diego County and elsewhere at times as required.

The pay range for this California position is $33.00- $40.00 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
