Hearst Television seeks an ambitious and motivated

Data Journalist

to join our new dynamic data journalism team. This role involves uncovering enterprise stories and innovating new ways to engage our viewers with compelling content. If you love traditional local journalism, are obsessed with data analysis, and you have the skills to merge those passions into meaningful, visual, and impactful stories, this is the job for you.

This data journalism team will regularly collaborate with our Television and Digital national teams, including the National Investigative Unit. You will be focused on fact-based journalism that captures the deeper context on big stories and relevant topics and uncovers the stories behind and within the data. You must have a deep understanding of and experience with seeking out and compiling data, interpreting it, and reporting it in ways that help viewers and readers understand and experience the results.

You have interest in breaking news, local and national news, politics, business and consumer content, and trending topics. You will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting data and delivering those findings by authoring news articles and building experiential content on our digital platforms, or by contributing to stories produced by our television journalists and consumed in more than two-dozen television markets.

We are searching for a highly organized and detail-oriented person, a self-starter with high-standards, a team player, and an expert communicator who can provide and take feedback as we deliver unique content on all platforms.

This is a full-time in-person job based in one of our Hearst Television markets or at our corporate offices in Washington, DC or New York City.

Responsibilities:Develop story ideas, research topics, locate relevant data, verify and fact-check information, and enhance storytellingGather, analyze, interpret, validate, and present data to help break news, create exclusive content, and support our storiesWrite and produce online stories based on your data analysisConceptualize and help develop digital experiential content from data to enhance stories and online contentWork collaboratively on data research tied to local and national investigations and content for our consumer unitAssist with brainstorming and developing processes to create and manage internal databases and content management and delivery systemsManage multiple data and storytelling projects simultaneously while ensuring quality, ethics, and thoughtful decision makingEffectively communicate and work seamlessly with all team members and managers, creative and digital teams, legal, and other Hearst divisions to complete projects and elevate contentQualifications:

A minimum of 3-5 years of data journalism experience and/or a degree in data science, journalism, or a related fieldExperience in gathering, interpretating, and visualizing complex data sets to produce or support TV or digital contentExperience in investigative journalism and dynamic written and visual storytellingAbility to work with a wide range of datasets, including census, government, demographic, political, financial, and economicExpert knowledge of and comfort with R and/or Python, and Excel, Sheets and/or TableauUse of statistical methods and data visualization techniques to identify patterns and trends and discover data outliersWork under pressure, make quick informed decisions, and organize and prioritize multiple data projects at onceRelated military experience will be consideredSalary

The estimated base salary range for this role is between $95,000 and $105,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as transferable skills, work experience, business needs, market demands and conditions, including geographic location where the work will be performed, and other factors permitted by law. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
