31 Jul 2024 Eastern Daylight TimeGeneral Summary:The part-time Writing Center Assistant Director will assist the Director of the UMass Boston Writing Center with tutoring and programming support. The Assistant Director will help the administrative team with daily tutoring-related activities and ongoing consultant training, as well as provide routine and timely information to faculty, students, consultants, and other university stakeholders. The Assistant Director will also facilitate writing-related programming for students and faculty, participate in programmatic assessment, and contribute to writing reports, social media materials, and other content for the Writing Center.This position is a 0.5 FTE. This position requires in-person work on campus and might require some weekend and evening hours.Examples of Duties:Mentor undergraduate and graduate student consultants on writing center pedagogy and practice. Encourage conversations about sessions; collaborate with administrative team to assess consultants; co-coordinate professional development staff meetings and orientations; support consultants in research and conference participation; communicate with consultants about policies and procedures and support in ensuring these are maintained by all Writing Center consultants and users.Collaborate with the Writing Center administrative team on the Center’s daily tutoring-related activities. Collaborate with the administrative team in recruitment, hiring, and retention of a diverse consultant staff. Identify departments, offices, and programs on campus as potential recruitment spaces; distribute information on hiring; participate in conducting interviews and hiring consultants.Create and maintain the Writing Center’s network of contacts across and beyond the university. Generate ideas for and facilitate new collaborations and partnerships across campus. Receive and respond to inquiries about the Writing Center. Create website and social media content to promote the Writing Center.Assist Director and administrative team in designing and leading workshops, writing groups, retreats, orientations, etc. for faculty and undergraduate and graduate students based on best practices in writing studies and writing centers. Create materials such as Powerpoints, handouts, and worksheets. Write descriptions of and advertise events widely; assist with pre-event coordination; attend events and assist with event logistics; follow up with participants as appropriate.Collect and analyze data on Writing Center outreach and related aspects of the Writing Center; collaborate with Director on reports and other materials related to outreach.Mentor undergraduate and graduate consultants on outreach initiatives; draft and revise promotional scripts for classes, faculty meetings, orientations, etc.; train consultants on facilitating class visits, workshops, and presentations.Engage in regular assessment of the Writing Center and its practices. Be professionally engaged and updated on writing studies and writing center scholarship; participate in professional development.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree; demonstrated writing and communication skills; demonstrated ability to work in a diverse working environment individually and collaboratively. Master's degree in English, Education, or related field preferred. Experience in administration of a writing or tutoring center or prior experience as a writing center consultant preferred. Experience teaching and/or facilitating events and workshops preferred.Ability to mentor, support, and effectively communicate with undergraduate and graduate students.Excellent interpersonal and public-speaking skills, including the ability to listen carefully and offer appropriate advice about teaching and tutoring writing to university stakeholders.Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to explain systems and processes to the Writing Center administrative team, consultants, students, faculty, and campus partners.Ability to collaborate effectively with the Writing Center administrative team and to work on multiple projects with various deadlines at the same time.Ability to take on substantial responsibility, work independently, offer and take constructive feedback, and anticipate and meet all deadlines; ability to collaborate with the Writing Center administrative team both synchronously and asynchronously.Experience with data in Excel or other programs; experience with and/or interest in learning WCOnline or other scheduling systems; experience with and/or interest in learning Canva for design work; experience and/or interest in managing social media accounts.Application Instructions:Please apply online with your resume, cover letter and list of three professional references.Review of candidates will begin following the application closing date.Only Internal candidates in the Professional Staff Bargaining Unit will be considered during the first 10 business days of the posting.
