ACLS Mission and Overview

Formed a century ago, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a nonprofit federation of 81 scholarly organizations. As the leading representative of American scholarship in the humanities and interpretive social sciences, ACLS' core principle is that knowledge is a public good. As such, ACLS strives to promote the circulation of humanistic knowledge throughout society. In addition to stewarding and representing its member organizations, ACLS employs its $181 million endowment and $34 million annual operating budget to support scholarship in the humanities and social sciences and to advocate for its central role in the twenty-first century.

This role reports to the Director of Communications

Project Summary

Reporting to the Director of Communications and working closely with the Communications Manager and program staff across the organization, this internship will focus on organizing libraries (Canva templates, website media library, photo and video assets, testimonials and written features), collaborating on improvements to processes involving the collection and storage of library assets, and contributing to the creation of new content for these resources.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the creative side of ACLS communications strategy and outreach. This intern will gain valuable skills and experience in brand management, digital asset management, editorial process, website content management, and presentation for lay audiences, as well as develop their own portfolio of work to use for future opportunities.

This role is intended as a remote position and requires 20-25 hours/week with flexible work hours.

Responsibilities include:

Edit interview transcripts and identify excerpts that illustrate positive outcomes and benefits of ACLS programs, initiatives, and partnershipsCoordinate with Communications team in storing and cataloging digital assets on network drive, on website, and in Canva platformAssist with review and assessment of how these libraries are organized and draft recommendations for improved collection and storage processesAssist Communications team in requesting, collecting, and organizing photos and testimonials for the 2024 Annual ReportDraft features on fellows and grantees for use on the websiteCollaborate with Communications team in optimizing content with metadataCreate and deliver culminating presentation for ACLS leadership and staffPerforming related projects as assignedQualifications:

Currently enrolled in a degree program or a recent graduate (1-2 years) in marketing, journalism, communications, emerging media, multimedia, or related fieldStrong proficiency in MS Office Suite and CanvaExcellent process development and organizational skillsCreative, solutions-oriented mindsetAbility to work collaboratively, as well as independentlyExcellent ability to navigate multiple priorities and deadlinesExcellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skillsInterest or experience in issues and challenges facing the humanities and interpretive social sciencesEagerness to learn more about operations for nonprofit communications practices

Compensation:

$25 per hour
