Job Summary:

To conduct polysomnographic exams on patients in order to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. To provide polysomnographic, diagnostic, and therapeutic services of patient care and education. To score sleep studies and help with cleaning and upkeep of equipment and sensors.

Education & Experience

Meet the educational requirements for registry by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as a Registered Sleep Technologist (RST)

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); Certified as a RPSGT or RST

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge about sleep, sleep disorders, and testing procedures. Skilled in recognizing and providing age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of patients. Skill in the preparation and calibration of equipment used for testing. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills. Ability to gather and analyze patient information. Ability to follow procedural protocols. Ability to document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure and significant events. Ability to score studies to completion.

Responsibilities

* Performs a variety of polysomnographic exams on sleeping patients to detect common sleep disorders.* Follows procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data. Documents procedures and data recorded from exams in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnogaphic results.* Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet patient-specific needs and to determine final testing parameters. Explains pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures to the patient in order to educate the patient.* Prepares and calibrates equipment used for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments if necessary.* Scores sleep/wake stages and clinical events and generates applicable reports when appropriate.* Performs equipment care and maintenance and complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.* The duties listed are general in nature and are examples of the duties and responsibilities performed and are not meant to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
