Library Web and Applications Developer

Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, us, 02912

Job Description:

The Library Web and Applications Developer is a core member of the Library Digital Technologies development staff. The developer supports and enhances the Brown Digital Repository (BDR) and its ecosystem of web applications, regularly works with the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) on faculty projects, and supports the John Hay Library staff to support and enhance special collection digitization projects and web applications. This position also supports special projects affiliated with peer institutions such as developing and contributing to a combined data lake of university holdings for interlibrary borrowing and collections analysis, and working with the Digital Public Library of America to enable Brown to play a leading role in enabling smaller libraries and local historical societies to contribute their holdings data. In addition, the developer meets Library project needs that arise such as developing interfaces and integrations with enterprise University systems or Library systems, as well as development projects that range from small file uploaders to larger web applications. The developer is actively involved in the planning, development, project management and review aspects of the work. In addition, this position continuously learns about and shares with the team Library best practices, tools, trends, and suggestions for new initiatives.

The Brown University Library is a dynamic center of scholarship and community at the heart of a world-class research university. Supporting and collaborating with a broad and diverse academic constituency, the Library is essential for Brown’s mission “to serve the community, the nation, and the world by discovering, communicating, and preserving knowledge and understanding in a spirit of free inquiry.” Integrating with Brown’s ambitious strategic plans, the Library is a site of innovation that fuels intellectual creativity. Signature Library initiatives include the establishment of the Center for Library Exploration and Research to increase campus and community impact; the Racial Justice Project to assess and counteract the legacies of historical racism in library practice; the Digital Publications Initiative pioneering new approaches to born-digital scholarship; and a revisioned special collections program that is positioning the John Hay Library as a research destination and leader in reparative and community-based collecting. We are seeking outstanding library professionals at all levels of the organization who are excited about advancing academic excellence at the highest level, and who will bring a wide array of backgrounds, experiences, and abilities to a scholarly community that is actively committed to being more diverse and inclusive.
