Position Summary

Columbia University Libraries is currently seeking applicants for the position of Bibliographic Assistant VI in the Preservation Division. Established in 1974 with responsibility for preserving Columbia University Libraries' collections in all formats and genres, the Preservation Division provides a comprehensive program to prolong the existence and accessibility of the collections for current and future students and scholars. The Division coordinates with other units in the Libraries to assure preservation of all Libraries' content.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Preservation Reformatting and Metadata the incumbent will perform a variety of tasks to support the Library's digitization program including: performing quality control on digitized material; processing image files; creating and editing metadata; uploading files and metadata to the public digital platform; inspection of microfilm reels; and preforming other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Work with files from in-house and vendor digitization workflows to complete quality control, cropping and deskewing, and file renaming.

Follow procedures for uploading/downloading files and project tracking.

Create metadata for reformatting workflows (digitization and microfilming) using library standards and tools.

Upload files and metadata to digital platform for public viewing.

Quality check of eBook online and other relevant improvements and upgrades of public eBook.

Bibliographic and technical inspection of microfilm reels.

Complete other work for reformatting workflows, including but not limited to searching for existing eBooks, collating and ILL page/volume replacement, packing/unpacking vendor shipments, and dispatching volumes after reformatting.

Assist with training and overseeing work of student general assistants completing basic tasks for reformatting workflows.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma and/or its equivalent and one year of relevant experience required.

Ability to work with digital image files and metadata.

Experience with image editing (Photoshop preferred) and spreadsheet programs (Excel or equivalent).

Technical proficiency and ability to learn new digital tools quickly.

Attention to detail.

Ability work independently and to maintain production levels.

Ability to handle fragile materials with care.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

Previous experience in academic libraries.

Familiarity with OCLC Connexion and cataloging standards and practices.

Experience with bibliographic databases.

Knowledge of imaging standards and best practices in a library setting.

Experience with command line operations.
