Under general supervision, perform the duties as a data analyst including processing data collected at sea, merging independent data sets, performing quality control, preparing data reports for publications online, and creating figures. Perform data quality control which requires a basic interpretation of data, drawing on experience from the field and from having a strong background in marine science. Laboratory tasks at shore will include inventory and ordering of supplies, preparation of reagents and standards for chemical analyses and maintenance of equipment. General laboratory management will include copying, filing, answering the telephone, and maintenance of laboratory and office equipment.Duties at sea (for up to 120 days per year at sea) are to organize and oversee watch activities (watch-leader), such as prepare and deploy a CTD-rosette system, collect and oversee seawater sample collection, biological sampling with nets and pump systems, and data entry. Setup and manage seagoing data acquisition PC network and sample analysis instrumentation. Perform analytical tasks, such as analyses for chlorophyll, primary production, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and salinity. Train volunteers to assist in CTD deployment and recovery, water sampling, and sample processing. Monitor data and metadata collection at sea insuring data quality by performing preliminary processing and analysis, including, troubleshooting data processing and creating preliminary figures.Assist in the programming of software for oceanographic instrument communication, data acquisition and processing using Python drawing from a background in coding. Troubleshoot existing Visual Basic software and translate into Python while streamlining and improving. Use and adapt software tools to process and merge data, quality control and generate data products using Python and Matlab. Assist in creating programming scripts to automate and improve data processing and figure generation and automation. Ensure proper communication between software, analytical instrumentation, oceanographic sensors, ship systems and networks. Assist in instrument, sensor and sampler maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs, and in designing new instruments and samplers drawing from an engineering background.QUALIFICATIONS

Possess a BA or BS in marine science with a strong oceanography or engineering background, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge and demonstrated experience in programming software and designing graphical user interfaces (GUI) in Python for data acquisition and processing.

Knowledge and demonstrated experience programming and debugging scripts in MatLab and Visual Basic.

Theoretical and practical knowledge of physical oceanography. Experience processing oceanographic data; knowledge to assess hydrographic data quality and perform quality control.

Theoretical and practical knowledge and background in mechanical engineering principles. Ability to diagnose and repaid mechanical issues.

Knowledge and experience in electronics such a circuit diagnostics, soldering, battery and cable construction, connector and fuse replacement, winch wire and slip-ring terminations, marine wiring.

Knowledge and experience with oceanographic instrumentation such as Seabird CTD. Proven ability setting up, interfacing with ship's infrastructure, deploying and recovering oceanographic instrumentation including CTDs.

Experience using Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite, particularly writing queries in Access and using Excel, Adobe Illustrator, mapping and statistical software. Experience with setup, networking, and operating computer systems and basic troubleshooting.

Experience in operating general laboratory and analytical equipment, including ability to perform titrations, collect high quality data, and perform minor troubleshooting and repairs on laboratory analytical equipment.

Experience in performing sample analysis. Ability to carry out chemical and biological analyses at sea and in the laboratory, such as rates of primary production using radioisotopes, chlorophyll a, oxygen (automated Winkler), and salinity.

Sound knowledge of chemical principles and regulations needed to oversee safe handling and storage of chemicals and radioisotopes.

Demonstrated ability to process, publish, and manage data; write technical/scientific reports, laboratory records and methodology; collect and compile metadata, and manage files in digital and online formats.

Proven ability to work at sea for extended periods of time up to 120 days per year in cruises up to 40 days long. This will include being able to work in laboratories or on deck with machinery in rough weather.

Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.

Ability to drive a car and truck. Demonstrated safe driving skills.

Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academic, staff, student and volunteer employees and institutions/organizations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be prepared to go to sea for 120 days per year.

Background check and DMV check required.

Must have a California driver's license.

The position is subject to a DMV check for a driving record and a valid driver's license.

Must be able to give and hear verbal commands in a noisy environment at sea.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lb.

Pay Transparency ActAnnual Full Pay Range: $60,260 - $96,936 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)Hourly Equivalent: $28.86 - $46.43Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
