North Star Policy Action (NSPA) seeks a creative and self-driven Communications Director to create and manage a communications plan that builds brand awareness and maximizes the visibility and impact of our research products.The Communications Director will be responsible for building a communications program, managing media relations, and creating social media and web content. The Communications Director joins a small team that is creative about leveraging our skills and networks to maximize our impact on the policy conversation in Minnesota.NSPA is an independent research and communications institute that is dedicated to improving the lives of everyday Minnesotans by advancing bold ideas that change the conversation and bring communities together. For more information visit northstarpolicy.org.Specific responsibilities of the Communications Director include:Creating and managing a detailed communications plan that increases brand awareness among the media, policymakers, and the general publicWriting and producing content for website, social media, media advisories, press releases, remarks, and policy papersManaging NSPA’s website, social media and digital communications, regularly posting new and organic contentBuilding and maintaining relationships, pitching stories, speaking with and turning out local mediaOrganizing and implementing earned media events and editorial board visitsThe position will be working remotely, but with regular meetings in the Twin Cities Metro. Some travel for out ­of ­town work assignments will be required.Job qualifications:Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Policy, or a related field and five years of experience in communications with a community, labor, non-profit and/or progressive organization(s) or political campaign(s). Or, a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:Knowledge of organized labor and movement building, Minnesota political landscape and/or independent expenditure political campaigns, and have experience facilitating or working in coalitionsSuperior communications skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely summarize complex topicsKnowledge and experience related to communications planning, social, earned and paid media programsExcellent organizational, time-management, and oral and written communications skillsStrong commitment to social justiceThorough knowledge of policy analysis and developmentAbility to work with people from diverse backgrounds and culturesAbility to handle multiple projects and meet established timelinesCompensation:This is a full-time, exempt position.
