Location: Redmond, WA (ON-SITE job)

Nature of employment: 12 months - potential for extension up to 2 years

Direct client

Internal job id: FT0628-1

From the manager:

“We need an EE with strong fundamentals and must be able to operate as generalist who understands all the aspects of building hardware, from circuit design to layout of complex FPC+PCB systems, to integration, bring up, and support of hardware in research applications. Should be able to handle multiple small and large projects at the same time. Communication and collaboration is also very important as many of our requirements come from non-engineer researchers.”

Job Description:

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer to help bring cutting edge virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences and hardware to life. In our Audio Research & Advanced Development projects, we are setting out to fundamentally transform how people interact with sound; bringing these experiences to the daily lives of billions of people. To make this possible, we need a well-rounded team that nurtures kinship, fosters good communication, and is sympathetic to the challenges in these diverse domains.

In this role, you will be cooperating with engineers and researchers to concept, design, and build the next generation of research hardware systems that enable social VR and AR. You will be collaborating and contributing at a deeply technical level and guiding the efforts of team members supporting you; including vendors and manufacturing partners. You will be responsible for intaking requirements from researchers and engineers, defining optimized workflows, identifying risks and associated mitigation plans, and clearly communicating to program stakeholders. You will lead the design of hardware that includes audio and power supply circuitry, small microcontrollers, large System On Chip devices, FPGAs, MEMS sensors, and cameras.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, exhibits a sense of ownership, and enjoys an honest and considerate environment. We have a wide variety of problems that need solutions, and we depend on people who are comfortable with embracing a creative, thoughtful approach to both short-term and long-term problem solving.

Responsibilities:

Lead electrical development for audio hardware in a highly cross-functional team environment.

Architect, design, and debug all circuits for audio chain (including codecs, embedded DSPs, headphone amps, speaker amps, and microphones).

Audio system design, definition, and ownership (i.e. render/capture/amplifier/power delivery/audio chain).

Develop POC demos to establish performance, gaining cross-functional and leadership buy-in.

Collaborate with Research Scientists, Research Engineers, and Product Development Engineers to establish performance metrics for research technologies from low to high maturity.

Minimum Qualifications:

5+ years of experience working across one or more of the following areas: audio, wearable, and/or consumer electronics devices.

Proficient in designing and debugging Analog and Digital circuits.

Experience with circuit simulations and modeling utilizing: SPICE simulation (filter design, frequency analysis, transient analysis), Audio Precision, OrCAD or Cadence or similar schematic capture and PCB layout tool.

Experience leading and driving electrical design development from schematic capture, PCB layout through assembly.

B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Acoustics, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Integration and analysis of sensors (IMU, Accelerometers, Mics etc.)

Circuit design experience with Microcontrollers and programmable logic / FPGAs.

Experience with bringing up and debugging high-speed digital systems.

Experience integrating RF technologies such as WIFI, BT, GPS, etc.

Years of Experience:

5-7 Years of Experience

Must-Have Skills:

5+ years of experience in audio, wearable, or consumer electronics devices.

Proficiency in analog and digital circuit design and debugging.

Experience with circuit simulations and modeling using specific tools (SPICE, Audio Precision, OrCAD, Cadence).

Knowledge of leading and driving electrical design development from schematic capture to assembly.

Integration and analysis of various sensors (IMU, Accelerometers, Mics, etc.).

Circuit design experience with Microcontrollers.

Experience with programmable logic/FPGAs.

Familiarity with bringing up and debugging high-speed digital systems.

Knowledge of integrating RF technologies (WIFI, BT, GPS, etc.).

Nice to have skills (Optional):

Any background in consumer product development, or audio products would be a big plus, but not required. Most of our hardware is wearable, size constrained, battery powered, and loaded with sensors (MEMS microphones, IMU, amplifiers, speakers, and cameras), as well as MCUs, DSPs, analog signals and digital busses). Lots of custom flex cables and small PCBs.

Degrees/Certifications:

B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Acoustics, or equivalent experience.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

Collaborate with cross-functional teams on audio hardware development.

Architect, design, and debug analog and digital circuits for audio chain components.

Lead audio system design and ownership.

Develop proof-of-concept demos.

Work with research scientists, engineers, and product development engineers to establish performance metrics.
