About the Position

This position leads the Viking Union (VU) Organization’s marketing and communication functions including an organizational marketing program and Information/Welcome service desks. This includes working with teams to develop and convey an engaging, positive, and welcoming messages and experiences for our diverse university community about our Student Union facilities and Student Involvement programs. The position includes supervising one student marketing position as well as the Viking Union’s Information Desk.

The State HR classification for this position is Communications Consultant 2.

Marketing Coordination and Leadership

Provides leadership to Viking Union Organizations marketing and communication efforts, collaborating closely with Student Involvement Staff, VU IT and VU Operations Staff.

Lead regular Marketing Team meetings including members from across the VU Organization.

Coordinates with AS Publicity Center, communications office, and other building partners in a collective effort to market our facilities and the programs here.

Works with Marketing Team to develop and manage departmental social media content, messaging, campaigns, and experiential marketing activities.

Liaison with WWU's Communications, social media, and Design, and Copy services teams.

Participate in professional development regarding access, diversity, equity, and inclusion that advances abilities to provide positive, caring, and culturally responsive communications.

Multimedia Design and Content creation

Review design layouts and create content for marketing, communications, and publicity materials

Develop campaigns, promotional materials, that enhance our diverse campus community's connection to Student Union Facilities, Student Involvement programs and the WWU (Western Washington University) Brand.

Write, edit, and proofread and produce content for social media, publications, websites, promotional materials, building signs, and identity graphics

Capture video, photos, and other multimedia of departmental activities for social media and publicity materials

Review, revise, and edit content to that connects in a positive manner, is inclusive our WWU's diverse community, and conforms with university brand and accessibility standards

Periodically reviews departmental published materials, building signs and online content for accuracy

Provide multilingual communications and utilize campus resources to collaborate with translators in producing translations.

Experiential Marketing

Collaborate and coordinate events and activities to help build community and connections between Western Students that showcase our facilities and campus programs.

Builds relationships with student programs, clubs, and campus departments.

Coordinates with campus program offices in specialty week and seasonal activities

Leads team in developing drop-in activities that supports marketing message

Coordinates event related logistics from service providers like catering, event support, etc

Assessment

Collects feedback, perceptions and different forms of data that measure the degree to which the department is meeting its mission and goals -Conducts periodic and annual assessments to collect feedback from student users and the campus.

Coordinates participation in national bench marking surveys to collect perceptions and data from Users and non-users of the VU

Analyzes trends from online engagement, building traffic and other data points

Collaborates with WWU institutional effectiveness to measure department goals in institutional survey assessments and analyzes data to identify emerging trends.

Budget Authority

As a Budget Authority, develops and manages the VU Information and Welcome Services and Marketing budgets.

Purchases supplies and promotional materials for areas of supervision and marketing initiatives

Monitors expenses within assigned budgets

Prepares and projects annual expenses for area in support of the departmental budget development

Supervision

The following employees directly report to this position: (1) Student marketing assistant, (1) Information Desk Student Supervisor, 7-9 Information Desk Attendants

Supervision includes hiring, training, evaluating and approving timecards for employees.

Conducts hiring processes for selecting new student employees

Staff Functions

Attend organizational meetings and staff meetings

Participate in professional development activities that support creating work that is engaging, positive, and inclusive

Participates in other University and departmental search committees as assigned

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education/experience

One year experience in publicity and marketing with responsibility for translating an organizations mission and values into effective promotions and communications

Experience using social media marketing tools to build brand awareness

Experience assessing the effectiveness of marketing and promotional efforts

Demonstrated experience working effectively in diverse and inclusive environments, with a commitment to foster and promote an environment of accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI)

Demonstrated project management experience

Experience using leadership skills to complete collaborative projects

Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills

Experience collaborating on projects using Microsoft 365 or Google Suite products

Experience supervising and managing employees including hiring, training, and evaluation

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or other related business field

Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite to create content for print, social media, and other digital forms of communication

Experience working in higher education or other education related field

Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software or similar tools for enhancing engagement of customers, via digital experiences, email campaigns, or social media campaigns.

Salary$4,586 - $6,166/month depending on qualifications and experience.
