A welding designer utilizes their knowledge and experience to review, modify, and design welds to facilitate high quality construction of modern ships for the United States Coast Guard, Navy, and other government and commercial customers. Utilizes the latest computer-aided design tools such as AutoCAD, Navisworks, and ShipConstructor. Gathers information, calculates and checks welding sizes, and adds welding callouts to production drawings. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, production, and planning groups to ensure a highly producible design.

Typical duties and responsibilities:

Calculate and check welding sizes for production drawings.Add welding callouts to production drawings.Coordinate with other sections when appropriate.Ensure Computer Automated Design (CAD) standards are followed.Ensure work meets requirements of applicable regulatory body and job specifications.Required skills, knowledge, and abilities:Shipyard welding practices.Regulatory body welding rules and practices.AutoCAD experience.Shipyard build strategy practices.Read and understand scantlings.Some knowledge of manufacturing processes.Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.Desired but not required skills, knowledge, and abilities:ShipConstructor experience.Navisworks experience.Field welding experience.Production experience.Experience & Training:Completion of two years of college level course work equivalent to an AA degree in technology or equivalent field experience
