Job Summary

The Assistant Director, Media and Public Relations manages and oversees the daily operations of positive media outreach and institution-level social media in support of the university's marketing and communications initiatives.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:Participates in the strategic planning for assigned areas and assists the Assistant Vice President in developing and implementing the overall departmental strategic plan.Generates and maintains a strong local, regional, state, and national public presence for the University.Maintains effective relationships with media sources to increase airtime and print space for University news.Cultivates expert sources within the University to help promote the faculty, staff, and programs on campus. Develops and conducts media training with University expert sources.Directs and assists with the creation and management of social media strategy and content development. Trains and oversees all social media content creators across the University.Coordinates media access to campus and provides media management for special events.Writes and edits materials for a variety of sources including website media, social media, press statements, articles, and reports.Establishes performance goals and measures to evaluate the success of assigned areas of responsibility.Participates in formulating and implementing policies and procedures.Supervises the day-to-day operations of assigned areas including the supervision of departmental employees. Provides guidance and direction to staff involved in department services and programs.Directs departmental activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of staff.Participates in the planning and administration of departmental and project activities.Interviews, hires, trains, and evaluates staff to ensure adequate staffing within budget.Other Duties:

Required Qualifications:

This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.Professional full-time experience in marketing, communications, graphic design, public relations, or other relevant experience.Experience shooting and editing video.Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook).Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree from an accredited institution in marketing, communications or related field.Experience with audio or multi-media production, communications or marketing project management, graphic design, writing, photography, print layout and design, print production, or social media design.Experience managing brand-level social media accounts.Experience as a news writer.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of marketing strategies and communication principles.Knowledge of developing and cultivating positive stories to generate media interest.Knowledge of the inner workings of the local, regional, and national press.Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, verbal, and visual media.Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) Style.Knowledge of social media publishing and analytic tools.Knowledge of supervisory principles, methods, and techniques.Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.Skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.Ability to shoot and edit video.Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.Ability to effectively manage the work of others by providing information, guidance, and motivation.Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Pay Grade: 18
