OVERVIEW : The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University is a federally funded center with exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students and is tasked with developing and disseminating innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide while providing information, training, and technical assistance for parents and professionals to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from birth to age 21.

Summary:Reporting to the Website and Design Manager, the Graphic Designer visually documents the "complete Clerc Center experience", including academics, campus events, national initiatives, and other community involvement activities, and works closely with the team to capture visuals for print and online products and marketing efforts that support the Clerc Center's brand and departmental initiatives.

Job Description:Works with multimedia design and graphic production; provides project leadership skills to support Clerc Center's work, national initiatives and the Office of Clerc Center Communications; and enhances and conveys information of the media clearly to visually present the viewer with a better understanding and appreciation of the content.

Serves as an active member of project teams to ensure high quality graphic design for the Clerc Center's online learning communities, website, online products, print products, and strategic plan initiatives.

Advises Clerc Center personnel on visual imagery, provides assistance to and shares professional knowledge with members of the design team, interns, and department; consults and communicates with clients towards understanding of needs; and provides finalized camera ready art, with technical specifications.

Analyzes problems and concepts; and uses visual and aesthetic design skills to convert the client's script or idea into a pleasing useful visual concept.

Provides high-quality photography services for the Clerc Center community; manages incoming photography requests; collaborates with schools and Clerc Center departments to fulfill their photography needs; contacts, coordinates, schedules, and photographs people and other subjects for Clerc Center publications in various settings, such as awards receptions, family dinners, business meetings, instructional activities, student life activities, and commencement events, which are provided at various campus locations and in and around the Washington, D.C. area.

Edits and color corrects photos using appropriate design programs; maintains an extensive, organized, accessible, and current library of quality photographic images representing all aspects of life on campus; and disseminates photographs as directed.

Develops, maintains, and updates systems to archive and safely store Clerc Center photographic and graphic design images. Converts photos to JPEG, tags the metadata and labels, and uploads them to server archives and online photo databases for future retrieval; and manages all photo library archiving and distributes photos using social media and in-house distribution to promote the Clerc Center and Gallaudet University.

Respects and maintains confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy; and maintains and organizes accurate records of media release forms and ensures compliance with permissions granted.

Researches the media output of schools, organizations and programs serving deaf and hard of hearing students to explore ways of constantly improving marketing materials; and stays up to date on the latest marketing and creative tactics and strategies.

Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.

Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.

Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree.

A minimum of three years of professional experience with photography, graphic design, or a related field.

Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in a K-12 setting.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

Strong skills using Adobe Creative Cloud software, including but not limited to Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop for small projects as needed.

Strong ability to develop, maintain, and update systems to archive and safely store photographic and graphic design images, convert photos to JPEG, tag metadata labels, and upload to server archive for future retrieval.

Strong understanding of the graphic design process in order to interface with members of the production team.

Strong file management and organization skills.

Strong ability to plan and manage multiple demanding projects simultaneously.

Strong ability to plan composition, lighting, and background of photography and video projects.

Strong skills in evaluating and preparing backgrounds and application of both off-camera and studio lighting as needed to successfully complete assignments (including complicated advanced architectural photography, marketing photography, and sports photography).

Demonstrated experience with implementation and management of content management systems (CMS).

Demonstrated experience with photojournalistic style of photography and portrait lighting.

Demonstrated experience with DSLR equipment, lenses, and proper applications of lenses.

Demonstrated experience in systems built with basic HTML and CSS.

Demonstrated experience working with graphic designers, writers, editors, and clients.

Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.

Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
