The Role

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

The Submarine Engineering Advanced Capabilities team is looking for a strong team member to support the development of Undersea Warfare Design concepts, and also the next generation Fast-Attack Submarine, SSN(X). This is an exciting opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new design program and have influence over what will become the Navy's premier attack submarine platform.

This position will be responsible for working collaboratively with other key stakeholders throughout the SSN(X) conceptual and design phases of the program to:

• Lead electrical systems and components, and cableways studies for Undersea Warfare studies and future US Navy attack submarines

• Lead technology research and development studies to influence the future of US Navy submarines.

• Need to be flexible with work assignments and may perform duties outside of traditional discipline work scope to include fluid systems and HVAC if needed.

• Be responsible for leading and mentoring other designers in various studies.

• Lead these cross-functional teams through design development and evaluations, and collaborate with designers and engineers to:

-solve complex spatial integration issues while meeting system and overall ship requirements

-translate operational capabilities and technology selections into workable 3D product model arrangements

• Be able to develop and effectively communicate design packages to both internal leadership and external customer(s).

• Be prepared to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

This position will work closely with engineering and design personnel/peers for feedback in these areas, and require regular interface with these teams to accomplish responsibilities outlined above. The candidate should have the ability to manage and track the products in their AOR, represent the team in meetings, and be prepared to brief management with status updates if needed. This person will also serve as an advisor to management, other task leads, and other various customers when needed. The successful candidate should be willing to work any project or task regardless of discipline, size, or scope. This position is for the Submarine Engineering – Advanced Capabilities team in Department E35. Ability to obtain Secret clearance will be required.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

NNS Apprentice School graduate

Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

• Extensive knowledge of US Navy submarine systems, requirements, system integration, arrangement best practices, and submarine unique considerations is preferred.

• Extensive experience in arranging a variety of submarine electrical systems and components, and cableways,

• Knowledge and experience with multiple submarine platforms and other navy platforms for contrast is preferred.

• Experience in reading production drawings and interpreting technical manuals and documents.

• Knowledge and experience using Siemens NX and Teamcenter, and also Inventor.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently, and in groups.
