Executive Director – Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA), Kearney, NE Museum Search & Reference is excited to announce the opportunity to assume the leadership of a beloved regional art museum dedicated to the art and artists of Nebraska. The Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) is in the midst of a major, $36.5-million restoration, renovation and expansion project, including $5 million allocated to an operating endowment. MONA is slated to reopen to the public in 2024 following a three-year closure. MONA is the only museum dedicated to telling the story of the state through its art and is closely affiliated with the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The museum’s history dates to 1976, with the birth of the Nebraska Art Collection. MONA’s collection represents 200 years of history and comprises over 5,000 works by artists of local, national, and international acclaim.MONA serves as a cultural center for Nebraska art and artists by providing quality exhibitions and programs to audiences in Kearney and statewide. Approximately 21,000 people visit the museum each year and an additional 22,000 participate in its outreach programs. MONA is uniquely positioned to make an enormous impact on the greater community and the state.Opportunities of the PositionThe ideal candidate will have a passion for regional art and solid management along with fundraising skills, the capacity to inspire and support staff, and the leadership experience to take the reins at MONA. The candidate will lead the major renovation and expansion project and successfully bring it to fruition.The Executive Director will be expected to:Work with committees of the Board to bring the currently ongoing capital campaign to a successful conclusion.Interface with MONA’s owner’s representative on the building renovation and expansion project.Develop and envision the museum’s anticipated growth and chart a strategic plan for its future.Lead the development of all exhibition and education programs.Oversee the stewardship of the collection and new acquisitions.Advance and develop strong fundraising and marketing plans.Utilize a strong philanthropic mindset to sustain and develop relationships with donors and stakeholders.Develop and manage an annual operating budget of $1.5 million.Work closely with a Board of Directors to encourage transparent leadership and communications.Build and strengthen an active partnership with the University of Nebraska at Kearney.Engage with the local arts community to support arts and culture throughout the region.Collaborate with university staff to ensure adequate building and grounds management.Possess good communication skills and the ability to motivate staff and volunteers.Embody a coaching and mentorship mindset, supporting professional development.Bring awareness of best practices in the museum field.Education and ExperienceThe ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:M.A. in Museum Administration, Art History, History, or related field and at least three to five years in a leadership role at an art museum or state history museum.Experience developing strategic plans and overseeing exhibitions and collections.Strong working experience partnering with Boards of Directors.Successful supervisory experience along with strong organizational, communication, and team-building skills.Excellent organizational and planning skills; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.Familiarity with facilities management and/or experience with building expansion and renovation.Willingness to travel regularly to advocate for and represent MONA.A degree of personal understanding or connection to Nebraska and the Great Plains.Compensation$110,000–$130,000 per annum (commensurate with experience).The position is based in Kearney, Nebraska.MONA’s comprehensive benefits package is provided through the University of Nebraska at Kearney.To apply , submit the following materials via email to Suzanne Tan, Senior Search Consultant, Museum Search & Reference at SearchandRef@museum-search.com:A letter expressing interest in this position and giving brief examples of past related experience.The names of three references with contact information.Submit application by
