POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of Advancement, the Creative Works Manager will oversee and manage the zoo’s visual communication strategies to ensure brand consistency and support the zoo's mission. The Manager will lead the design team in creating high-quality graphical elements for various platforms, including print, digital, and on-grounds signage. This role includes developing positive relationships with internal departments and external vendors, managing budgets and deadlines, and ensuring the successful execution of design projects.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPReports directly to the Director of Advancement. Directly manages the Creative Works Team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Design Leadership:

Work under the direction of the Director of Advancement to develop visual communication strategies that align with Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s goals.Manage and oversee all visual communications, including branding, print, digital media, and on-grounds signage.

Team Management:

Supervise and mentor the design team, ensuring high standards of quality and timely delivery of projects.Provide constructive feedback and professional development opportunities for team members.Collaborate with various departments to design and produce printed and digital materials for internal and external audiences.Coordinate with external creative consultants and vendors to produce materials as requested.

Project Management:

Develop and manage project plans, timelines, and budgets to ensure projects are completed on time and within scope.Facilitate regular project meetings, set milestones, and track progress against project goals.Coordinate with various departments to gather requirements, provide updates, and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to address project challenges.Ensure clear communication and documentation throughout the project lifecycle, including project briefs, status reports, and post-project evaluations.Maintain a comprehensive project management system to track and manage all design projects.Analyze the long-term needs of the zoo’s design strategies based on best practices and the zoo's strategic plan and mission.Content Management:

Oversee the maintenance and cataloging of a database of photos and videos; coordinate with other departments for event photography/filming.Manage in-house print production and large-format printer maintenance.

Quality Assurance:

Proofread all external zoo materials for design consistency and quality.Ensure final designs are accurate and meet the zoo's brand standards.

Other Duties:

Perform other duties as assigned.Must have skills, experience, expertise, and capabilities to complete all tasks and projects assigned to the Creative Works team.Maintain commitment to the zoo’s mission and conservation efforts.Balance public transparency with the need to maintain strict confidentiality when necessary.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience:A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in graphic design, including at least five years in a supervisory role.A bachelor’s degree in visual arts, graphic design, or a related field, or an equivalent level of experience.Professional experience working with design agencies or managing agency strategy and budget.Strong portfolio demonstrating proficiency in graphic design, branding, layout design, typography, and attention to detail.Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop; experience with Lightroom and Procreate preferred.Experience with web design and large-format printers preferred.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Technical Skills:

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.Experience with project management software (e.g., Wrike, Workfront, etc., preferably Monday)Knowledge of social media platforms and their design requirements.Familiarity with WordPress and other web development platforms.Excellent Communication Skills:

Interpersonal conflict resolution methods.Effective promotion of the organization and services offered.Clear verbal and written communication.Impeccable proofreading and editing skills.Ability to listen, provide feedback, and respond positively to critiques.Capacity to teach and mentor others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Incumbent performs in a typical office setting, with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities which do not generally involve muscular strain, but do require activities related to walking, standing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Requires occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.
