You will contribute to our mission by researching and writing original case studies and developing corresponding modules and workshops for undergraduates. You will have the opportunity to work primarily remotely (only being on-site as needed). We are open to candidates looking for either a part-time or full-time appointment. There may be 1 or 2 individuals hired into this position.Socially Engaged Engineering and Design (SEED) case studies are microhistories that use an in-depth exploration of a single service, product, technology, event, or biography as an entry point for analyzing the impacts of engineering solutions and reflecting on broader issues of identity, power, and privilege in engineering work. We build our case studies by gathering diverse source materials that include academic articles, policy briefs, legal documents, news stories, press releases, interviews, social media posts, and more. We synthesize these sources to create original readings and workshop materials tailored to engineering course topics and instructors' learning goals. Summaries of the existing cases in our growing library are available on theCase Study Initiative's website (ngin.umich.edu/SEED-case-study-initiative/) .In this role, you will dive deeply into topics at the intersection of technical and social issues, and you will translate interdisciplinary research into innovative teaching materials that use hands on-activities and discussions to challenge long-standing perceptions of engineering as a strictly technical field. Your work will have a broad audience. To date, C-SED facilitators have brought case study content to thousands of students at the University of Michigan and partner institutions. We will provide training and support in our case development process, and our partner instructors consult on cases as subject matter experts. You will report to C-SED's Assistant Director of Educational Content and Research Integration, and you will collaborate closely with members of the facilitation team led by C-SED's Assistant Director of Experiential Learning.Key skills for this position include:+ Deep curiosity about social contexts of science, technology, and engineering+ Ability to analyze engineering processes and impacts of engineering solutions from a social lens+ Ability to design readings, discussion prompts, and activities that create space for students to think critically about complex social issues without simple answers and that support students in developing their own values+ Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research that draws on academic and non-academic sources to support case creation+ Ability to research and write case content with implementation in both asynchronous module and synchronous workshop format in mind (e.g., defining learning outcomes, scaffolding content, and generating activities and discussion prompts)+ Ability to work independently within established case development processes and to set and meet project deadlines reliably+ Ability to write in a clear, direct style that is accessible to an undergraduate audience+ Ability to receive and effectively integrate ongoing feedback from a wide range of collaborators (e.g., partner instructors, writing group members, and facilitation staff)+ Comfort with flexibility in adapting to the emerging needs of collaborators as projects evolve**Who We Are**Michigan Engineers are world-class educators, researchers, students and staff who strive to build a people-first future.
