Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a candidate for the position of Social Media and Graphic Design Strategist in the Office of Communications. This position conceptualizes and creates designs, concepts, and layouts, and produces digital, video, and photographic content for various social media channels, internal and external websites, and print collateral to support the public relations, marketing, and community relations initiatives of the agency. These activities promote the awareness, understanding and positive image of the agency, agriculture, and industries represented by the agency to the public, industry stakeholders, and internal audiences. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth's telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of public relations strategy, communication concepts and techniques, and electronic communication distribution channels, to include Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. Demonstrates skills in Associated Press Style writing, social media strategy and content development, graphic design, relationship building, organization, and developing and maintaining brand management strategies. Ability to design visually appealing and cohesive graphics for social media posts, advertisements, and other promotional materials, track and analyze key performance indicators of social media campaigns, possess ability to research, plan, implement and evaluate social media programming, meet deadlines, and work independently. Ability to manage communications between the agency and state/local stakeholders, communicate effectively using information technology, websites, and social media, and perform crisis communications with various audiences. Demonstrated ability to write professional, clear, concise, and compelling communications, proficiency with graphic programs and design concepts, and demonstrated knowledge of audio/video recording and editing. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) and Adobe Creative Suite, to include Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Premiere. The selected applicant must have and maintain a valid driver's license with a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. H.S. Diploma or equivalent required.

Additional Considerations

Combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of graphic design, visual/media arts, public relations, mass communications, journalism, English, or related field will be taken into consideration. Experience related to agriculture is not necessary, however, an interest or curiosity in agriculture, food, nature, and the outdoors, and/or Virginia would be helpful in performing this role. Demonstrated experience as an agency/organization communicator is preferred.
