The Art Department at Random House Children’s Books seeks a Senior Book Production Designer, who’s a highly motivated, experienced individual with the project management and technical skills to support our vast and successful backlist. This hybrid role, which marries prepress printing and digital design, includes, but is not limited to, executing corrections to reprints, preparing reissues or other backlist initiatives with redesign and the design of unique proprietary projects for special accounts. In a fast-paced, collaborative environment, the Senior Production Designer must be highly organized, process-oriented and will utilize their expertise to enhance project outcomes, anticipate and solve issues related to potential design and production-related problems. Random House Children’s Books is filled with talented individuals who are passionate about making high-quality books. This role reports to Senior Art Director who leads the team handling Proprietary, Reprints, and Backlist management for all the imprints within Random House Children’s Books, including Anne Schwartz Books, Bright Matter Books, Crown, Delacorte, Doubleday, Dragonfly, Ember, Golden Books, Joy Revolution, Knopf, Labyrinth Road, Laurel Leaf, Make Me a World, Random House, Random House Graphic, Random House Studio, Rodale, The Princeton Review, and Yearling. Many beloved books you may remember from childhood, such as the Berenstain Bears and Junie B. Jones, and new favorites, such as the Sweet Valley Twins graphic novels and the One of Us Is Lying series, are handled by our team The ideal Senior Book Production Designer is creative, highly organized, and adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, a strong grasp of prepress printing, and a comprehensive design portfolio. A minimum of 5 years of experience in print publishing is required, with hands-on project management experience preferred. The role demands effective collaboration with various departments within the division, including Editorial, Managing Editorial, Art/Design, and Subsidiary Rights. The perfect candidate will be detail-oriented, a skilled problem solver, able to handle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment, and eager to enhance their bookmaking skills. The Role:• Ability to refine design concepts, prepare print-ready files per production’s guidelines, and maintain brand and licensing consistency through multiple formats.• Apply changes to the layouts and text, with a focus on correcting color and creating digital pre-press files for all book formats.• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and develop design solutions that align with license or brand guidelines and objectives.• Self-manage workload to meet deadlines and prioritize accordingly.Please apply if you meet the following requirements:• 5-7 years of production design experience in an agency or in-house corporate graphic design environment.• Exceptional attention to detail with a strong knowledge of pre-press settings and requirements, 1-color and 4-color printing process, and PDF workflow.• Strong sense of composition with a focus, typography, color theory, and layout design.• Highly proficient in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) and other relevant design tools.The Essentials:• Knowledge of Quark Express a plus.• Proficient in photo manipulation techniques and color correction• Layout design expertise with an emphasis in print publishing• Highly organized, able to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and manage time efficiently.• Strong attention to detail, quality and process.• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively, with sensitivity and self- awareness, in large group settingThe salary for this position is $70,000.
