The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU is student-centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.The EMU Craft Center supplements the out-of-classroom experience by providing students educational, cultural, leadership, social and recreational activities.Position SummaryThis position supports the Craft Center educational program through the delivery, coordination, promotion, and ongoing evaluation of the Welding, Glassblowing, and Blacksmithing studio workshops and open studio hours. The position provides daily studio management. The individual in this position provides daily formal and informal instruction to university students and community members and assists in developing program offerings.In addition, this position serves to:• Prepare and assemble materials and supplies for classes, including purchase of supplies.• Set up studio and materials for other instructors.• Arrange daily schedule of studio use, reservations and clean up procedures.• Oversee, schedule, and assign work to studio assistant student employees.• Organize and set up outreach events and promotional materials for students on campus, recruit participants for program, and collect student data to track participants.The individual in this position will routinely:• Assess the needs of participants, communicate policies and procedures to a diverse group of people, and resolve minor conflicts.• Provide ideas for new program opportunities to Craft Center management team.• Organize, manage, and execute daily operations of the welding, glassblowing, and blacksmithing areas. This includes operating electric and gas furnaces; overseeing participants in welding, blacksmithing, and hot glass; maintaining hot glass, welding, and blacksmithing equipment; cleaning the facility; and ordering supplies.• Be responsible for all safety precautions inherent in maintaining a public studio.• Work collaboratively with Craft Center professional staff and student employees, as well as EMU staff and students.• Assist in the promotion of the Craft Center and serve as a campus resource to the university community and Craft Center participants.This position works a .75 FTE schedule. Typical schedule is M-F 11:00a-5:30p with flexibility around class schedules. Work conditions and physical demands are typical of those found in a studio, with conditions including high-temperature equipment and lifting of supplies/equipment that can weigh up to 75 pounds. This position may be asked to assist in the procurement of supplies and may require the ability to qualify for UO driver's certification, which includes maintaining a current driver's license.Minimum Requirements• High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two years of relevant experience (paid or volunteer), supporting community programs that serve children, youth, or adults OR• Associate Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery, or related functions.AND• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.• Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.• Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.Professional Competencies• Excellent customer service skills.• Ability to set priorities and work with minimal supervision.• Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.• Awareness of and ability to be responsible for all safety precautions inherent in maintaining a safe public studio with high-temperature equipment.Preferred Qualifications• Bachelor's degree in fine arts, or equivalent combination of education and experience.• Experience in welding, blacksmithing, and glassblowing to include a comprehensive knowledge of gas forges, gas and electric welding equipment, gas reheat furnaces for hot glass processes (glory holes), electric glass furnaces, and maintenance experience with equipment for these high-temperature processes.• Understanding of safety procedures around welding fumes and UV exposure and safety equipment in welding and hot glass processes.• Supervisory and prior teaching experience.FLSA Exempt: NoAll offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check.This is a classified position represented by the SEIU Local 503, Oregon Public Employees Union.The University of Oregon is proud to offer a robust benefits package to eligible employees, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
