The full job description covers all associated skills, previous experience, and any qualifications that applicants are expected to have.Position Summary/ObjectiveThe Director of Basketball Communications for the Minnesota Lynx will lead and manage the team’s communication efforts to enhance its brand and public presence. Key responsibilities include developing and executing strategic communication plans, developing and maintaining a consistent organizational narrative, and overseeing media relations. The role also involves guiding content creation, social media strategies, and game-day communications, while managing the Basketball Communications Manager. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills and a proven background in strategic communications.Essential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions:Strategic Communication & Brand Elevation: Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies to enhance the Minnesota Lynx’s team and brand. This includes crafting media pitches, planning content, and implementing initiatives to elevate the team’s public profile.Narrative and Messaging: Design and sustain a compelling organizational narrative that showcases team achievements, community involvement, and inclusivity. Ensure consistency in messaging across all internal and external channels. Oversee the creation and distribution of written materials, press releases, and media advisories.Media Relations: Act as the principal liaison for all media interactions, including local, national, and international outlets. Organize media availabilities, interviews, and appearances for the Head Coach, front office, and players, cultivate and manage relationships with broadcast partners (TV RSN and iHeartRadio) and coordinate with production crews.Content and Social Media Management: Serve as a key advisor in the development and implementation of team-owned content and social media strategies, ensuring engaging and effective digital presence. Collaborate with internal leaders to promote the Lynx through events and storytelling.Game-Day Operations: Direct all game-day communications, including media coordination, notes, and credentialing. Liaise with Target Center for home game and event logistics.WNBA Season Travel: Responsibilities will include travel with the team for away games as well as league sanctioned events such as Draft and All Star.Leadership and Management: Provide oversight and direction to the Basketball Communications Manager, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. Clearly define roles and responsibilities, support professional development, and foster a collaborative team environment. Implement effective workflow strategies, monitor performance, and provide constructive feedback to enhance team effectiveness.Monitoring and Evaluation: Track and assess social media activity related to players, coaches, and media to ensure accurate and appropriate messaging.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other3-5 years of leadership / people leader experience.5-7 years of sports communications or relevant experience strongly preferred.Microsoft PowerPoint and Office proficiency required.Experience working in collegiate or professional women’s sports encouraged.Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience preferred.Strong written and verbal communication skills required.Able to work on a team and independently.Able to form effective partnerships internally & externally.Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays.Supervisory Responsibility, if any:

This position does have supervisory responsibility.Work EnvironmentThis job operates in a professional office environment. Office hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. In addition to working office hours staff may work external events including but not limited to: games, charity and networking events. Work is generally sedentary in nature. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available. This job also operates in a sports arena, which includes bleachers/steps.Physical DemandsWork is generally sedentary in nature. The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available. This job also operates in gymnasiums, the Timberwolves/Lynx practice facility, and a professional sports arena, which include bleachers/steps. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others both in person and over the telephone. The employee frequently is required to remain in a stationary position, as well as operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone. Staff will occasionally ascend and descend bleachers/steps and traverse around the arena both on event days and non-event days.
