POSITION SUMMARY

Check you match the skill requirements for this role, as well as associated experience, then apply with your CV below.The Senior Editor, Journals, is responsible for the copyediting, production, and publication of research articles and other scholarly content accepted for publication in APA's portfolio of psychiatric journals as assigned. The Senior Editor ensures that content meets standards of quality and editorial style, that articles are published expeditiously, and that compiled issues meet standards of quality and delivery deadlines. The Senior Editor also synthesizes article content into brief promotional text for internal and external audiences to encourage online usage and coordinates promotion with the APA Communications and social media teams.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs technical review of papers in peer review system for potential production problems and provides instruction for decision letters to authors.

Copyedits and reviews freelanced copyediting of articles for publication in journals as assigned

Edits articles as assigned for editorial house style, grammar, punctuation, and accuracy; ensures that manuscripts present authors' ideas in a clear, precise, and effective manner, verifying scientific nomenclature for accuracy and consistency and resolving discrepancies between text and displayed material and in cited references.

Ensures consistent data reporting across abstract, main text, and tables and figures; ensures transparent reporting of basic numerical data, such as percentages and sample Ns and comparison groups.

Oversees work assigned to freelancers:

performs "second reads" of manuscripts copyedited by freelancers to ensure that the level of editing is appropriate and meets standards for style, grammar, accuracy, and presentation and data reporting

completes production work on tables

provides feedback to freelancers as needed.

Uses the online submission site (ScholarOne Manuscripts) to identify any special instructions from Managing Editor and to evaluate copyright and disclosure forms for compliance with APAP policies; edits the manuscript accordingly, adding disclosure statements as needed.

Edits and formats tables and reviews and validates type and digital tagging (XML) specifications to meet typesetter and online platform vendor requirements.

Edits authors' graphics and instructs Production Manager on formatting for print and online presentation.

Confers with authors about their edited manuscripts and page proofs to ensure accurate incorporation of alterations and satisfactory resolution of problems/issues.

Quality assurance and production

Performs quality checks of edited manuscript files, typeset proofs, and compiled issues (folio) before releasing to vendor.

Identifies quality problems with composition and tagging and participates in periodical quality improvement discussions with vendor.

Identifies and implements adjustments to workflow to accommodate new technologies and procedures.

Prioritizes work to minimize time between article acceptance and publication and facilitate article-based workflow, adjusting schedule on occasion to accommodate high-visibility articles.

Promotion of content

Writes succinct, character-limited text for promoting use of online content for internal and external audiences and reviews and revises freelancer-supplied promotional text as needed.

Communicates with author, Managing Editor, APA Communications, and social media team about upcoming content for press release consideration.

Copyedits, formats, and coordinates occasional Editor's Choice topic collections for online promotion and print (up to 4 per year).

Communicates with Medical Editor to solicit video abstracts from authors for appropriate articles and coordinates receipt, approval, and production of video files.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsible for daily editorial work on articles in various stages of production.

Responsible for communicating with psychiatric and mental health professionals about the revision of their articles prior to publication.

Requires thorough knowledge of technical copyediting and all stages of editorial production for scholarly journals, from accepted manuscript, to copyediting and resolution of queries, to typesetting into proofs and incorporating corrections, to rules of layout and composed typesetting, to finalizing articles for online publication and for the compiled issue.

Regularly reviews in-house style guide and provides periodical input on updates, ranging from editorial style points to continually evolving usage of clinical and cultural terms (e.g., related to race and gender), reflecting broader changes in the field and medical community.

Requires knowledge of publications policies, such as copyright and permissions and standard statements needed in research papers.

Success is frequently measured as publication of articles in a timely fashion, absence of substantive errors resulting from editorial copyediting actions.

COMPLEXITY, PROBLEM SOLVING, & DECISION-MAKING

Exercises significant latitude in copyediting papers for comprehension, editorial style, consistent data reporting and presentation, and format for display on typeset page; in querying authors for specific responses to enhance clarity and setting deadlines for authors; and in instructing the typesetter.

Exercises significant latitude in assessing freelancers' work and performing second read/"top edit" to prepare the edited manuscript for author review, adding technical queries concerning data reporting, checking disclosure statements against authors' forms and reconciling or querying as needed, and reformatting tables as needed for optimal presentation.

The selection and interpretation of editorial style guidelines and table presentation involve choosing from or presenting alternatives where all are correct but one is better than another depending on the given circumstances.

Consults with authors to approve copyediting or provide further revisions to enhance understanding and accuracy of the accepted article.

Consults with supervisor to confirm completion of edited files prepared for typesetter.

Consults with supervisor or upper management as needed for exceptions to editorial policies, such as undue difficulty getting compliance from authors to transfer copyright or secure permissions to reproduce copyrighted material from other publishers.

Consults with/informs supervisor concerning nonresponsive authors who are overdue in returning editing or typeset proofs for correction.

Consults with supervisor concerning authors who make excessive changes to proofs.

Recognizes complex problems concerning lack of compliance with copyright and permissions, institutional review board and informed consent statements, and confidentiality for individual case reports and escalates them to the appropriate level.

Recognizes problematic author requests or nonresponsiveness concerning reporting and presentation of data and dissemination of work pre- or postpublication.

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT & AUTHORITY

Relationships span levels internally and externally and center on partnering with authors who are psychiatrists and mental health professionals, with medical editor of the journal, and with typesetter.

Uses diplomatic skills to obtain trust and cooperation with authors in order to resolve issues on manuscripts and proofs to produce articles that clearly convey authors' research and message.

Uses diplomatic skills to obtain trust and cooperation with medical editor to approve promotional text, secure author compliance with submission requirements for specific article types, and approve lineup for compiled issues.

Uses diplomatic skills to obtain trust and cooperation with typesetter to improve composition and online published articles.

May represent the organization as a liaison to other scholarly publishers with feedback provided to management.

ORGANIZATIONAL KNOWLEDGE

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of APA Publishing's processes, relationships, and responsibilities as well as the interactions within the organization, such as concern communications channels for promoting published articles to APA constituents and subscribers.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

BA/BS and at least 5-7 years of relevant experience and/or sufficient relevant work experience in a scholarly publishing environment.

Strong attention to detail and excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.

Excellent communications skills for articulating specific queries to authors to clarify nuanced shades of meaning and resolve discrepancies in reporting of research.

Excellent time management and ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Solid understanding of scholarly publishing standards and processes.

Solid understanding of composition requirements, rules of page layout, and fidelity of proofs through production stages.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
