WestEd's Communications Department provides a broad range of institutional support to help the agency accomplish its mission. This support includes working with agency researchers, professional developers, and other service providers to capture and disseminate useful research-based knowledge; using both print and digital formats, including WestEd’s award-winning website, to raise visibility and extend the reach of the agency and its individual programs; marketing WestEd services, using an integrated approach; providing publishing services for in-house authors; representing WestEd and its work at conferences and in other venues; and managing media relations.Communications Department staff work collaboratively with staff members from throughout the organization, as well as with external partners, to improve the effectiveness of information exchange and to broaden and sustain WestEd's reputation for doing high-quality, meaningful, and effective work.The Opportunity:

Our Communications Department is seeking an energetic, proactive, flexible, and detail-oriented UX designer to execute all phases of the design process within a close and collaborative central design team. The ideal candidate must be able to thrive under tight deadlines and be skilled at managing their time while juggling multiple projects. The work encompasses a range of tasks including understanding client goals for various deliverables including websites and other online products, conducting user research, creating user-centered personas, sitemaps, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and pixel-perfect visual designs.The successful candidate must also possess a strong grasp of design technique and fundamentals, color theory, and typography to elevate the overall design aesthetic of the work they are given, whenever possible.This role will work closely with members of our editorial, marketing, and design teams, and as such, a positive attitude and excellent collaboration and communication skills are essential for success. Additionally, this role also requires a self-starter who can work independently and move projects forward on their own.Creating websites and online products that are accessible to everyone, following federal section 508 compliance guidelines (under the American with Disabilities Act) is a critical piece to all deliverables at WestEd. As such, a strong grasp of compliance processes is highly sought after, but minimally, the individual must be interested in building their knowledge in this area through training, mentorship, and self-learning.This role may also occasionally require graphic design support, including complex document production, collateral material development, PowerPoint presentation production, document compliance production prep, and graphics creation.Core Focus Areas:Work with clients to understand and articulate their business goals in the context of UX designConduct user research to better inform the design and creation of websites and other online productsCreate user-centered personas, sitemaps, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and pixel-perfect visual designsDevelop visual designs that reflect or embody existing designs, brands, or identitiesEnsure that all websites and online products, when required, strictly adhere to accessibility requirements (federal, state, or other funder guidelines)Ensure consistency across all design components within a projectBe responsible for inputting — and closely checking — proofer edits and comments, once they have been checked by an editor or authorConfer with relevant author or editor about any editorial questions that might arise in the production processCollaborate closely with WestEd Design Director, design team, marketing team, and editorial teamCreating design specifications and digital assets for front-end implementationConduct visual QA for websites and online products prior to launchKeep documents, files, artwork, and all graphic assets organized, tagged, and stored in Figma and Box, our existing cloud-based platforms, so that files can be quickly found and accessed at a later dateFollow development timelines to ensure tasks are being completed on timeTroubleshoot problems as they ariseAssist the design team with other design-related tasks as the need arisesWhat We’re Looking For:Advanced knowledge of and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite applications, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and AcrobatAdvanced knowledge and proficiency in FigmaWorking knowledge of and experience with creating accessible designs and ensuring the accessibility of existing designsStrong conceptual knowledge of design principles, color theory, and typography and the ability to put that knowledge to use in your workWorking knowledge of HTMLExcellent oral and written communication skillsSuperior attention to detailStrong organizational skillsAbility to problem solve, think creatively, and seek out and apply new technology solutionsDemonstrated ability to coordinate, organize, and complete work around multiple tasks and multiple deadlines with a variety of different staff membersAbility to perform duties with independence, and to take initiativeFlexibility to adjust workflow occasionally if needed for purposes of meeting a deadlineFamiliarity with the field of education is an added bonus2+ years of UX experience, including experience with creating accessible websites and online productsMinimum of bachelor’s degree requiredNote:
