Hale Theatre produces eleven mainstage productions each year and up to sixteen concert productions. Hale Theatre is a family operated non-equity house that produces professional level productions.Summary:Broadly responsible to ensure each production and performance runs smoothly from first technical planning meetings through rehearsals and last curtainIs the department head of the scenic department and oversees the day-to-day operation of the scenic shop, ensuring that set pieces are built to design specifications, on-time and on budgetThe Technical Director supervises the scene shop departments, as well as full-time and part-time carpenters in the planning and execution of all aspects of scenery for HCT productions. They ensure the successful interpretation, engineering, and realization of all scenic designs while balancing budget, time and labor requirements, and maintaining a safe working environment.Responsible for all Technical production elements.Works with technical department heads to troubleshoot and problem solve any issues that affect safety, show quality, consistency etc.Oversees the completion of technical & scenic build projects and ensures that all technical needs are met and delivered on schedule and within budget.Work with department heads to ensure show specific technical training is developed, implemented and completed.Liaison between Scenic Shop and technical departments in theater.Responsible for all production maintenanceProduction responsibilities:Core DutiesTurns designer’s visual renderings into construction drawings to be used by carpentersBuilds sets and welds as necessaryDesigns rigging and special effectsSupervises carpentersOversees the prop and painting departmentOversees changeovers and Load-insAttends productions meetingsMaintains a safe work environmentOversees maintenance of shop equipment and work truckOversees cleanup and organization of set storageOversees theater repairs on nightly reportsInstalls special effects on Load-ins/ Stage TechniciansAttends rehearsals and techs as necessaryAssists in hang/ focus and lighting needs for Lighting DesignersTrains running crews in moving scenery/ rigging/ effectsResponsible for repairs and maintenance of lighting and sound equipmentManages and trains Stage TechniciansOversees stage supplies and inventories and special effectsKnowledge/Experience in these areas are a plus:Oversees all technical areas of theaterExperience managing sound and lighting equipmentStage manager and sound engineer experienceKnowledge of drafting or AutoCADThe ideal candidate has:3 Years or more of Professional Technical Director experienceStrong knowledge of Scenic Construction for TheatreTime and project management skillsExcellent interpersonal communication skillsHas excellent organizational and planning skillsDesigner Support and Collaboration:Communicate with Designers to support and execute designs with a high artistic standard within resources of time, labor, materials, and budgetEnsure design changes are communicated to production teamCommunicate with Stage Manager and Designer on rehearsal and tech notesCommunication:Maintains clear and consistent communication with other production departmentsDistributes technical ground plans and sectionsProvides samples and photos as needed to designers and directorsBasic Qualifications:Strong Knowledge of engineering fundamentals and experience with their application to non-theoretical problemsHands-on experience with the scenic automationSolid experience with safe, industry-standard rigging practices and hands-on experience building rigging systemsAdvanced knowledge of theatrical construction techniques, including carpentry, welding, rigging, and metalworkingThe ability to create technical drawings, implement scenery fabricationThe ability to communicate with kindness and clarity, fostering teamwork and a collaborative environmentAbility to adapt and quickly communicate changesAdditional Qualifications and Skills:Experience managing a theatrical shop floor environment.Comfortable driving a 26' truck or trailerMust be able to lift 50 or more poundsWork Schedule:Shop Hours M-F 9am-6pm; attend tech and preview performances, attend producer run throughs. Some evenings, weekends and holidays will be required.Flexibility in scheduling will be required to accommodate evening and weekend rehearsals, productions, and performances, based on production needs throughout the yearGroup medical health insurance to which HCT contributes 75% of the employee-only premium after 90 days employment.Free vision and dental insurance to which HCT contributes 100% of employee-only premium after 90 days employment.One week paid vacation after one year consecutive.
