User Services Librarian (PT) Mechanics' Institute, San Francisco, CA - Part-time

Please make an application promptly if you are a good match for this role due to high levels of interest.Working under the supervision of the Senior Director of Operations, the User Services Librarian is responsible for supporting the mission of Mechanics' Institute, to provide an excellent library collection, to offer instruction and assistance to support members' use of the collection and services, and to provide a variety of point-of-need and reference services to support members' pursuits in lifelong learning.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSProvide regularly scheduled professional contact with members at public service desks including reference and research guidance, assistance in the use of the Library's online resources and other technology tools, explanation of policies and procedures, and circulation functions.Manage assigned areas of the Library collection: perform professional duties required to maintain and enhance the collection and promote its use; maintain awareness of current reading trends and local cultural activities.Offer instruction to individuals and groups in using the Library's print and online collections, computer software, and other resources by direct interaction with members, in classes, and/or via the creation of library guides in various formats.Evaluate materials collection for age, physical condition, gaps in subject coverage, and weeding needs.Monitor spending and use of collection by subject areas, create quarterly spreadsheets of spending by DCC range and format, and make recommendations for materials budget.Contribute to the Library's public relations and marketing goals by creating online and print content such as book/film reviews, blogs, news features, bibliographies, etc. for Institute publications.Participate in staff development and continuing education activities including membership in a professional association and developing and maintaining technology competencies necessary for all aspects of job duties.Collaborate in the development of Library policies and procedures.Other tasks and projects as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSMLS from an ALA-accredited institution.At least 1 year of library employment experience.Collection development, specialized subject knowledge - Fiction plus other areas.Good working knowledge of modern library methods, procedures, research tools, and automated library information systems (Sierra, libraryIQ, Ingram).Skill in using current technology, including content creation.Excellent customer service skills - ability to communicate with members, donors, staff, and the public in a friendly and professional manner by phone, email, and in person.Effective communicator: skilled in teaching, articulating organizational value, and delivering clear presentations in person and virtually.Ability to exercise independence and judgment to manage workload, meet deadlines, set priorities, create clear and concise reports, and maintain accurate records and files.Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills. High attention to detail.Able to work well independently and as part of a team.Customer service and/or nonprofit experience.Must be able to work evenings and weekends.Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively throughout all levels of the organization.Ability to perform effectively within a fast-paced working environment.Proficient in standard business software including MS Office, Excel, Word, and Google Workspace.For more information, visit our website at: https://www.milibrary.org/jobs
