Job Description

NBC News Digital is seeking an experienced and deeply-sourced reporter to cover the FBI and Department of Justice.

The ideal candidate will navigate between daily coverage and publishing scoops, focusing on major cases and investigations as well as the inner workings and decision-making of the leadership of these agencies.

The ideal candidate will have impeccable, reliable and varied sources at these agencies and will be able to break news on the most competitive developing storylines and the most high-profile investigations, prosecutions and legal disputes in the country.

The senior reporter should be comfortable writing about the wide array of people and events that intersect with federal law enforcement. In one week the reporter may be focused on, for example, a major criminal event such as a mass shooting. In another, they may be focused on an FBI or DOJ investigation into an extremist group or large corporation. And in another they may be working on a newsy story about the relationship between the President of the United States and the FBI or DOJ's leaders or rank-and-file.

Working closely and collaboratively with the National Security and Politics team reporters and editors is a must. The role also requires a high level of writing skill, and the ability to file fast, sharp, accurate and engaging copy.

The reporter will be part of the NBC News Digital team, with an immediate focus on writing for NBCNews.com. The reporter should feel comfortable appearing on television to discuss their beat reporting and expertise.

This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of 3 days per week. It is full-time, based in Washington, DC. This position is represented by the New York NewsGuild - CWA.

Key Qualifications

10+ years experience covering law enforcementA robust and reliable source base across multiple FBI and DOJ departmentsIntimate knowledge of federal law enforcement investigative and prosecutorial procedures and practicesBachelor's degree or equivalent years of working experienceClean, accurate and engaging writing styleAbility to work collaboratively with colleagues covering law enforcement, intelligence, national security, defense, politics, and other beatsComfortable appearing on television to discuss beat reporting and expertise

Additional Requirements:

Hybrid : This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Salary range: $150,000 - $185,000
