LIVING IN ANCHORAGE:

Anchorage's metropolitan area comprises a diverse population just slightly above 400,000. While this is far from the likes of New York, Chicago or Los Angeles, it is also much larger than many of America's cities and towns and boasts many of the amenities of larger cities including, unfortunately, traffic congestion

The Pros :Amazing scenic beauty. No sales tax.Lot's of outdoor recreation opportunities. An abundance of daylight during the summer months.Easy access to fresh seafood and other locally sourced food.A friendly community and welcoming atmosphere.Opportunities for northern lights viewing.

The Cons :A narrower range of job opportunities compared to other similarly sized cities due to the dominance of government agencies, the healthcare sector, and the oil and gas industry.Isolation from cities in the lower 48.Traffic congestion.Limited public transportation.Length of the winter season.Short summer season.

Cost of Living :Anchorage's overall index in 2021 was 124.0, or 124.0% of the national average. This means that living in Anchorage is 24% more expensive than living elsewhere in America . There are many cities such as Chicago with a lower cost of living (-10%) and Minneapolis (-27%); however, many cities cost more: Seattle (+15%), Los Angeles (+17%), Oakland (+10%), San Diego (+12%), Brooklyn (+26%). It's all a matter of what city is being compared. If you are moving from a high cost of living city to Anchorage, the move can prove financially beneficial.

Permanent Fund Dividend :Residents who have lived for more than one calendar year in Alaska are entitled to a state provided dividend, In October 2023, for example, n early every Alaskan received a $1,312 check; their annual share from the earnings of the state's nest-egg oil fund.

Weather :Average daytime summer temperatures range from approximately 55 to 78 °F (12.8 to 25.6 °C); average daytime winter temperatures are about 5 to 30 °F (−15.0 to −1.1 °C) . Anchorage has a frost-free growing season that averages slightly over one hundred days. Winters in Anchorage are far less severe in temperature and inclement weather than many regions and major cities in the lower 48. The natural protection provided by the mountains and the cities proximately to the inlet ensure warmer temperatures than many other regions of the state.
