Neptune Medical is innovative and ambitious venture capital funded Silicon Valley medical device start-up. We have already commercialized novel medical devices using our Dynamic Rigidization technology in GI for our Pathfinder products. Now we are building something truly unique: A fully flexible robotic platform called Triton, intended to replace much of manual endoscopy. Director of Industrial and UX Design

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a pivotal position in a company that has a track record of integrating industrial design into all our products, based on a corporate culture of listening to and observing our stakeholder and customers and then using human centered design to shape the useability, customer appeal and brand values into those products working closely with our marketing, executive and technical leadership.

As a reflection of the way design is valued at Neptune, this position reports to the CEO.

As a company we have built a stable of world class designers and creative partners who work closely with our teams both in Robotics and GI Pathfinder product families. This role is to lead our ID and UX design to ensure these design disciplines get incorporated into relevant projects and to manage, optimize and grow new partner relationships as well as being an individual ID/UX contributor providing some design services across a variety of creative disciplines. The company is at a genuinely exciting threshold as we begin the design of our commercial products that are truly going to revolutionize flexible endoscopy. Many creative services are needed to support the teams and the ideal candidate will grow their skills and responsibilities as the company grows. Our VP of Industrial Design and UX Research is retiring at the end of 2024 and will work closely with the successful candidate to ensure a smooth transition.

In the next year or so the role includes providing industrial design support for Jupiter Endovascular as Neptune continues to provide services to that business which spun out in mid 2024. This is anticipated to be less than 20% of time commitment.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Understand where our technology and products are now, and their future potential. Working with our business units’ teams help them leverage the contribution Industrial and UX Design can add to our products and help put Neptune in a globally leading position in our markets, reinforcing our brands as the leaders in their respective fields.

Contribute to VOC gathering and with product management translate customer needs into Industrial Design and User Experience features, specifications, and performance goals. Be the evangelist of Industrial and UX Design. Communicate the plans to stakeholders.

Ensure that the Industrial Design and UX strategy supports the company’s overall strategy and goals.

Support the product management and executive teams by contributing to the creation of marketing and pitch assets that support our business goals. Look for opportunities to enhance these assets as our capabilities grow, and market conditions change. Help us manage and as we grow build our stable of creatives who contribute to this work.

To help Neptune execute in the above areas the candidate will draw on their design skills, industry knowledge and connections:

To help identify potential design and creative service partners.

Support the project scope defining activities with the technical and business leaders in our business units.

Assist the teams with managing these projects.

Be an individual design contributor to projects where they would benefit from an industrial and user experience designer and we are not working with outside resources

From insights gained from the above roles, understand the intersection of our technology, unmet needs, and competitive dynamics to help create an enhanced our intellectual property portfolio.

Contribute to the company’s continuous process improvement in the leadership areas detailed above.

Recruit and manage staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors or preferred a Master Level in Industrial Design, or related degrees.

10+ years of experience in Industrial Design.

7+ years of experience ID functions in the medical device industry.

Familiarity with FDA regulations and quality systems.

Hands-on leader and team player.

Proven track record as a pivotal part of a team that’s commercially launched successful first-of-a-kind products.

User research experience

Experience creating and managing schedules, budgets, financial forecasts, presentations, and plans.

A willingness to work hard, with a driven outlook and with a strong desire to succeed as an individual, as a manager, as a leader, and as a key part of the company.

Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.

An inventive aptitude balanced with discipline and detail-orientation.

Some domestic travel – including possible overseas if needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Startup experience and/or design consultancy experience

User research in healthcare/clinical environments, including observing and interacting with clinicians doing procedures on patients or in a clinical lab environment

Triton Robotics is located in Burlingame, CA, near the Millbrae Caltrain and BART station.

The starting base salary for this role is between $180,000 and $220,000 depending on experience. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: education, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for equity, benefits and 401(K) with matching.
