Editorial Director

provides an expansive editorial vision for the Indiana Publishing program, establishes the overall editorial strategy for the program’s acquisitions team, and is a member of the management team. The Editorial Director develops and implements the acquisitions strategic plan, proactively acquires projects that complement existing publication strengths, and ensures the continued integrity of content published through all channels of the Indiana Publishing program. Working with the acquisition team and fellow managers, the Editorial Director also identifies opportunities to build areas of new and exciting strategic interest and cultivates and sustains a diversified list. Additionally, the Editorial Director provides leadership for the acquisitions team, mentors, supports, and evaluates the performance of editors and assistants, and ensures that the team meets productivity and revenue objectives. The incumbent will cultivate and maintain an inclusive organizational culture, model intellectual curiosity for new and emerging areas of scholarship, and demonstrate a commitment to effectively addressing the challenges and needs of the scholarly community. This position may work remotely.The Editorial Director is a member of the Indiana Publishing management team. In collaboration and consultation with the Associate Directors of Indiana Publishing, the IU Press Director of Operations, and the IU Press Director of Sales and Marketing, the Editorial Director supports and contributes to the initiatives of Indiana Publishing, a newly developed integration of scholarly publishing services and resources. Indiana Publishing leverages the capabilities and expertise of IU Press and the IU Libraries Scholarly Communication department to enable access to a broad range of scholarship through a variety of publishing services and solutions.As a part of Indiana University Libraries, Indiana Publishing is committed to addressing the challenges of the scholarly communication and academic publishing ecosystems, transforming and strengthening publishing services and opportunities, and supporting a variety of sustainable models and formats for disseminating research and scholarship. The Editorial Director reports to the IU Libraries’ Associate Dean of Scholarly Communication & Publishing/Director of Indiana Publishing. Indiana Publishing includes resources and support for open, hybrid, and print journals, print and open scholarly monographs, IU conference proceedings, grey literature, and open educational resources and eTexts. Through such progressive publishing initiatives, Indiana Publishing advances the mission and goals of Indiana University by supporting local, regional, and international scholarship that has a global impact.Responsibilities The Editorial Director will:Develop and implement a long-term editorial strategic plan for the Indiana Publishing program and monitor the plan’s progress to ensure that milestones of growth and annual productivity and revenue goals are met or exceeded.Serve as the chief liaison with the Faculty Board of IU Press, working closely with its chair to ensure timely and full consideration of new scholarly book projects.Provide leadership and support for Indiana Publishing’s acquisitions team, comprised of two Acquisitions Editors and two Assistant Acquisitions Editors, provide regular performance reviews, and apply equitable hiring and promotion standards.Build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of potential authors, editors, and reviewers, with the overall goal of developing and diversifying the content portfolio of the Indiana Publishing program.Assess proposals and manage manuscript development with authors.Develop book lists in assigned areas to advance the publishing program and meet revenue goals.Acquire approximately 20-25 book-length projects each year in designated areas.In consultation with IU Press Operations and Sales and Marketing teams, forecast, monitor, and manage seasonal lists and prepare proposal materials for IU Press’s Faculty Board, including financial projections.Negotiate contracts with authors, agents, and other publishers.In collaboration with members of the Indiana Publishing management team, contribute to the ongoing development of publishing services, models, and resources.About Indiana Publishing Indiana Publishing leverages the capabilities and expertise of IU Libraries’ Scholarly Communication department and Indiana University Press to enable access to a broad range of scholarship through a variety of publishing services, solutions, and products. Under the administrative leadership of IU Libraries’ Associate Dean of Scholarly Communication & Publishing, Indiana Publishing includes resources and support for open, hybrid, and print journals, print and open scholarly monographs, IU conference proceedings, grey literature, and open educational resources and eTexts.Qualifications Required:Bachelor's degree in humanities, social sciences, or related field. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.Eight years scholarly publishing experience in book acquisition.At least four years of supervisory experience.Demonstrated knowledge of the current state of the scholarly book business, advances in digital communication tools, and trends in academic publishing and social media.Demonstrated experience with budget creation and financial forecasting.Demonstrated computer literacy and competency including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and database management, preferably FileMaker; facility with using online resources.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to interact tactfully, courteously, and with discretion.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relationships and to work cooperatively in a team environment.Preferred:Master’s degree in a humanities or social sciences field.Knowledge of one or more foreign language.Ability to lift and move boxes of books during setup and takedown of exhibits at scholarly meetings or for storage of inactive files.NOTE: Indiana University Libraries has exclusively retained Jack Farrell & Associates (www.jackfarrell.com) to find the winning candidate for this position.
