Job Summary:The Senior Editorial Manager, Special Interest Titles, plays a pivotal role in the editorial strategy across National Geographic’s special interest titles, including print and digital for National Geographic

History

and newsstand special issues. The Senior Editorial Manager is passionate about storytelling and story development and will manage a team of editors and assignments that fulfill an extensive publishing calendar. As part of a creative team, the Senior Editorial Manager works collaboratively with designers, production editors, photo editors, and cartographers to ensure high-quality work is delivered on deadline and with excellent sensibility.Responsibilities:Manages a creative team of editors, helps commission and edit numerous assignments on the publishing calendar.Ensures that all pieces of the project come together in a timely manner and adhere to word counts, factual accuracy, and other specifications.Adapts excerpts of published titles for nationalgeographic.com.Reports to the Editorial Director, Special Interest Titles on project development and challenges, and assists in title management, including contracts, scheduling, production stages, and administrative tasks, as needed.Develops, nurtures, and maintains new and ongoing relationships with writers and industry professionals.Basic Qualifications:Minimum of 10 years of publishing experience that demonstrates increasing editorial responsibility.Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and understanding of the editorial process.Excellent writing and verbal communication skills and strong knowledge of the National Geographic brand and mission.Ability to take overall responsibility for concept and content, as well as manage creative relationships.Ability to manage multiple projects at once, on deadline.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Self-motivated and resourceful, with the ability to work with minimal supervision, problem solve creatively, and exercise independent judgment.Preferred Qualifications:Curiosity about topics covered in the magazine, especially world history and geography, and the ability to grasp new subject matter quickly.Understanding of the editorial process from conception to completion.Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro; knowledge of AirTable is a plus.Required Education:College degree.Preferred Education:Degree in history or related subjects.

The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
