We are seeking a dynamic and strategic communications leader to join our Bio & Health team. This individual will play a pivotal role in amplifying the stories of our portfolio companies and shaping the narrative around our thought leadership in the industry. These innovations hold the potential to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and address systemic challenges within the healthcare industry. As a communications leader at a16z, you will be at the forefront of this transformation, shaping and communicating an important national narrative. We are seeking an experienced communications professional who is curious about technology innovation, is passionate about communicating new advances in bio and health, and who firmly believes that the future is health.

This role is open to candidates located in New York City (NY), Boston (MA), or San Francisco Bay Area (CA).

To join our team, you should be excited to:

Define and deploy strategic communication plans for the Bio + Health practice, and our General Partners; amplify our investment theses; build perspectives to be shared at industry-leading events, through traditional and social media, through written and audio content and through engagements with thought-leaders, founders, policymakers and press

Be a beacon and trusted advisor for our portfolio companies – you’ll be the marketing and communications specialist they’ll turn to on media and digital strategies, issues management, internal communications, and on how to use their voices to grow their brands and accelerate their commercial strategies

Maintain productive relationships with media and changemakers to help demystify new technologies and provide air cover and support for our Bio + Health portfolio

Expand strong industry networks and secure high quality brand-building opportunities for our general partners to write, speak, and lead key conversations

Build strong Bio + Health industry and media networks that you can put to work for our portfolio companies and the firm, including identifying and vetting appropriate agencies and consultants that we can recommend to our portfolio

Collaborate with our events and editorial/content teams on broader marketing initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years experience as a marketing leader in healthcare and / or biotech building and executing executive, thought-leadership, crisis, and/or product communications. You should have experience breaking new ground with narratives on a national scale

Demonstrated success building and executing multi-channel marketing and launch strategies for biotech and/or healthcare companies, inclusive of communication, social, media, events, content, etc

Experience building trust and providing counsel to executives and fast-paced teams, as well as creating best practices and playbooks that scale

Nimble, strategic and creative thinker who enjoys not only building strategy, but rolling up your sleeves to see it through. If you need an army of agencies or consultants this is not the role for you

Established track record of delivering impactful, content rich communications programs across multiple channels and stakeholders with demonstrable measures of success

Proven expertise crafting compelling narratives from complex science and technology concepts.

Strong and broad media relationships

Excellent writing and verbal communication skills

Solid working knowledge of the regulatory landscape in biotech and healthcare

A track record of success leading company launches and/or milestone-driven communications campaigns

High EQ: You are able to persuade, influence, and build trust at the executive level both inside the a16z and with outside networks and constituencies

Independent thinker. You are not afraid to say what hasn’t previously been said. You question the premise and challenge assumptions

Life-long learner: we are techno-optimists and our marketing team works hard to demystify complex subject matter to audiences through press, speaking, content and more

Respect for the entrepreneurial struggle and eagerness to coach, counsel, and support entrepreneurs of all stages with both compassion and expertise

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $309,000-$360,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
