Full-time, 3-year position with possibility to extendJob SummaryThe Center for Art and Public Exchange (CAPE) Co-Director, Innovation will develop and execute strategies to ensure the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) is using the platform of CAPE to lead museum practice towards more authentic ways of relating with community, power, class, and privilege through art. An initiative of the Mississippi Museum of Art, CAPE uses original artworks, exhibitions, programs, and artist residencies to increase understanding and inspire new narratives in contemporary Mississippi. Developed in 2018, it was founded on the values of equity, transparency, and truth to form community-focused brave spaces in the art museum. CAPE’s purpose is to create meaningful opportunities around visual art to have conversations about race, acknowledging the impact of racism, and celebrating a shared humanity. CAPE aims to foster conversations that deepen learning, understanding, empathy, and shift perspectives. The CAPE Co-Director, Innovation will strategically support the growth of CAPE’s impact on a state-wide and national level, developing knowledge-products, hosting an innovative slate of programs, and re-defining the community-museum relationship. The ideal candidate will be collaborative with an entrepreneurial spirit. This is a three-year position with the possibility of extension.Essential Functions:Leadership, Management, Accountability

Represent CAPE and the Museum’s mission, vision, and values with internal and external stakeholders.Guide team members’ growth and development, set clear priorities, and foster an inclusive work environment that fulfills the Museum’s mission and strategic priorities.Lead trainings and workshops on CAPE best practices to expand the work in the museum field.Partner with the CAPE Co-Director, Engagement to lead CAPE to a new level of opportunity, success, authenticity, and transformative impact.

National Advisory Council (NAC)

Support the Director with the re-invention and re-design of the National Advisory Council (NAC) to push CAPE’s agenda and visibility forward nationally.Schedule and plan annual NAC meetings, including hotel and travel logistics, agendas, and communications.

Programs and Convenings

Own the delivery of a bi-annual field-wide convening with a roster of nationally known thought leaders to inspire a community of shared learning and commitment and to discuss emergent museum practices.Hold pre-convening intensives for participants interested in taking a deeper dive in exploring CAPE methodologies.Populate and deliver on CAPE’s nascent disruption event calendar by developing programming that pushes the boundaries of what can be facilitated and accomplished in a museum setting.Partner with CAPE’s Engagement Director to lead long format community programming deploying conversations about artworks as a pedagogy.

State-wide Partnerships

Build exciting collaborations across the state of Mississippi that expand partners’ impact and reify the museum’s role as an anchor institution for all of Mississippi.In collaboration with MMA’s Affiliate program, expand CAPE’s impact and reach in communities across the state by regularly conducting listening sessions to determine needs of support and connecting audiences to art and one another.

Impact

Anchor MMA as a leading voice in redefining the community-museum relationship.Create training toolkits and knowledge products that push the work of CAPE forward in a dynamic and robust way.Capture and evaluate lessons learned to inform and guide the work.Market and communicate CAPE products and materials to the broader museum field with a focus of authentically serving local communities while also earning revenue that leads to a new business model.Publish learnings in peer-reviewed journals and other publication opportunities.Work with MMA’s marketing team to build awareness of CAPE on a local, state-wide, and national level.

Supervisory ResponsibilitiesYesCompetencyBachelor’s degree in business or equivalent field or professional experience.Experience working in the museum field, art sector, and/or social justice sector.Experience building and implementing a robust schedule of programs for both a community-based audience and a national network of participants.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.Excellent written and verbal skills.Proficient at managing logistics for collaborative meetings and facilitation of community-driven conversations.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesThe ability to network and think creatively about building collaborative reciprocal partnerships on a state-wide, regional, and national level.Knowledge of artists working nationally that integrate ideas about race, identity, and equity into their practices.An ability to foster trust and build relationships with people from all backgrounds.Experience with project management and utilizing project management software.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Ability to collect and process data in a meaningful way that measures impact.TravelNational and state-wide travel required.Salary Range$85,000 - $95,000Expected Hours of WorkExempt - This is a 40-hour a week job, primarily between Monday through Friday.
