JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State’s World Campus has an opening for an Instructional Designer who will work collaboratively with a variety of staff and faculty across multiple World Campus units to design and develop highly engaging non-credit and professional development courses that impact our diverse population of distant students, faculty, and staff across the university. This position specifically supports internal initiatives focused on improving the student experience and online teaching.This position reports to the Assistant Director of World Campus Online Faculty Development.

Required Competencies:

The job requires:

a solid understanding of the pedagogical principles of learning theory

application of existing and emerging educational technologies to engage learners

an in-depth understanding of instructional issues related to teaching and learning in online courses

teaching experience in academic or non-credit settings, such as professional development

demonstration of best practices in online teaching, learning, and design

effective communication to stakeholders about the advantages and disadvantages of various pedagogical techniques and principles

solid communication and collaboration skills

the ability to work independently to maintain course design standards and continuously improve courses

the ability to write for different audiences

demonstration of techniques that foster a climate of belonging in online learning and course design

the ability to identify content in need of revision and conduct learning theory and pedagogy research to improve course content

the ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects, ensuring timely completion while maintaining high quality

experience executing detailed plans/timelines with stakeholders and resources across units

Typical Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum requirement is a Masters degree plus one (1) year of related experience. This position is being filled at the Instructional Designer – Intermediate Professional level.

Preferred Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Experience using a Learning Management System (e.g., Canvas) and in-depth knowledge of the functionality is preferred.Experience leading a portfolio of courses while making decisions independently to maintain and improve courses is strongly preferred.

Additional Information:

This position has the potential to be performed fully remote or as a hybrid of remote and on-site working. Standard working hours are in the eastern time zone.
