Position OverviewMonarch Watch is an international organization based at the University of Kansas that leads education, conservation, and research programs focused on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration. Through various programs, including tagging, habitat creation, milkweed distribution, educational resources, and public events, Monarch Watch communicates with thousands of people each year. The Communications Coordinator will lead communication efforts, support business activities, and assist with special projects. They will promote Monarch Watch through consistent messaging that reflects Monarch Watch's mission and goals, and the interests and needs of our many participants, volunteers, and partners.Job Description60% - Public Communications and DevelopmentProvide input on Monarch Watch's communications strategyMaintain a schedule of Monarch Watch communications and evaluate the impact and outcomes of those communicationsRespond to inquiries via email, phone, etc., and talk with visitorsDevelop and review content for various Monarch Watch platforms, including for distribution via email, website, print, and social mediaCultivate relationships with Monarch Watch participants, volunteers, donors, partner organizations, and media contacts25% - Business OperationsSupport day-to-day operations of the program, including customer service related to the Monarch Watch shopPrepare reports, such as community participation/engagement in Monarch Watch activities, financial, etc.Supervise and train students and volunteers15% - Special Projects and Other Duties as AssignedSupport planning for and implementing eventsPrepare materials for grant proposals, research publications, etc.Provide other support as neededRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or relevant field, plus a minimum of 1 year related professional experienceStrong written communication skills, as evidenced in application materials.Strong interpersonal skills and experience communicating with the public, including with different audiences and age groups, and across different settings (in-person, virtual, etc.), as evidenced in application materials.Experience with developing communications materials, such as newsletters, website content, etc., in a professional setting (e.g., developing content from the perspective of an organization), as demonstrated by previous work experience.Experience with best practices in communications for organizations, as evidenced by education and/or previous work experience.Strong organizational and time management skills, as demonstrated by previous work experience.Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including managing multiple projects and deadlines, as well as short- and long-term goals, as demonstrated by previous work experience.Proficient in software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc., as evidenced in application materials.Preferred QualificationsExperience with monarch butterfly biology and conservation, as evidenced in application materials.Interest in working with/around insects, as described in the cover letter.One year of related experience in biology, as evidenced in application materials.Experience with state, public university, or other purchasing systems, as evidenced by application materials.Experience with state, public university, or other financial management and reporting systems, as evidenced by application materials.Experience with preparing reports, such as annual activity or financial reports, as evidenced by previous work experience.Experience with event planning, as evidenced by application materials.Supervisory experience, including hiring and training, as demonstrated by application materials.Experience with social media platforms, such as Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, etc., as evidenced in application materials.Additional Candidate InstructionsIn addition to the online application, the following documents are required to be considered for this position:Cover letter describing how you meet the required and preferred qualifications.ResumeList of three (3) professional references Only complete applications will be considered.Application deadline is 8/28/2024.Contact Information to ApplicantsKristen Baum - kbaum@ku.eduAdvertised Salary Range$41,299 - $61,948, commensurate with experienceWork ScheduleFull time; 40 hours/week with some weekend and...
