Nature of Work:

This is supervisory and professional work involving the management of the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public relations and press and marketing strategies. The individual in this position plays a key leadership role in managing staff in all department communications efforts. Work includes generating local press coverage of key messages, overseeing advertising and promotion, social media, and video and web development, content, and design. An employee in this position exercises considerable independence and receives general guidance from a supervisor.

Responsibilities:

Oversees the marketing and advertisement strategy for various services and programs in a City department or division(s).

Interviews, trains, and oversees the work of subordinates.

Actively seeks opportunities to promote the services provided by the department to the community while implementing and evaluating outcomes.

Writes and submits press releases while maintaining an appropriate working relationship with local and national news media. Fulfills press requests for information, interviews, story ideas, and photos. Provides talking points to senior level management for media engagements, public speaking events, and press releases. Serves as department’s spokesperson as needed.

Develops, directs, and proofs editorial content for various publications.

Proofreads and edits all marketing content.

Works with the Webmaster on the design and content of the department’s website. Utilizes Google Analytics to measure effectiveness of web content.

Develops and manages social media accounts and other media marketing strategies for the department to increase engagement.

Coordinates budget input as it relates to marketing and graphics functions within the department.

Manages relationships with third-party advertisers, photographers, printers, designers, partner organizations, and other vendors.

Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the department.

Delivers effective customer service to all patrons and members of the public including responding to customer comments and complaints.

Monitors and evaluates programs and strategies and recommends changes when appropriate.

Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field OR Bachelor's degree in any field AND two years of experience in marketing, communications, or public relations.

Special Qualifications:

Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to locations throughout the City during the course of the work day.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends.

Pay Range:

$68,785.60 with step increases to $92,664.00/Annually

Benefits:

Forty-hour work week; twelve days of paid vacation per year for the first five years; five days of management leave per year if employed on the first day of the payroll year; sick leave and twelve paid holidays. The City offers an employee’s group health insurance which includes major medical for individual or Family plan; Cash Pension Program, plus Social Security.
