ABOUT YOUThe ideal candidate understands that newsroom collaboration in brainstorming approaches for photo and video assignments is just as important as selecting images for stories. You have a keen understanding of how to choose images that resonate with readers and maximize impact, particularly on our digital platforms. You are a great communicator and can easily work with stakeholders across a range of newsroom disciplines - including reporting, design, and audience. You will be a coach for staff, guiding professional development and visual storytelling. You uphold standards of accuracy, fairness, and inclusion in the Star Tribune's coverage. We are a fast-paced, deadline-driven newsroom publishing on multiple platforms, so you will need to have a strong understanding of all areas of print and online editing, including social media acumen and photo/video usage on those platforms.

ABOUT USWe produce powerful visual journalism for breaking news stories, deeply reported narratives, explanatory pieces, and high-impact investigative reports. The photo team is expected to help generate daily and long-term story targets, and our editors come to meetings prepared to pitch story ideas. In addition to its desktop and mobile sites, social media accounts, and daily print newspaper, the Star Tribune also produces a variety of special sections. We center our community in all our coverage.

The Star Tribune is an award-winning newsroom recognized annually for its photo and video work (POYi, Best of Photojournalism, Edward R. Murrow Awards, regional Emmys, SND and World Press Awards). We are the upper Midwest's largest source of news and information with a weekly readership of 1.3 million people in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and with subscribers in all 50 states. RESPONSIBILITIESSets overall goals and vision for photos in our news, features, and sports sections.Manages daily and long-term planning, including handling credentialing, travel coordination, and direct editing with photographers.Regularly edits on deadline events.Responsible for daily print production, working closely with print designers in selecting photos in concert with digital edits done by other photo editors.Edit with all photographers, serving as a direct editor and coach for photographers.Comfortable handling breaking news for all sections when needed.Pitches in on other areas of coverage as needed.

If you apply, please let us know how your skills and experience relate to the role and its objectives.Demonstrated experience in a fast-paced newsroom is preferred, including at least some management experience of visual teams.Demonstrated ability to make strong news judgments, and ethical and culturally sensitive decisions under pressure.Demonstrated visual acumen in choosing photos for publication, with a wide-ranging knowledge of news, features, and sports photo editing.Demonstrated ability to research and track down photos, especially in breaking news situations.Experience with visual storytelling across multiple platforms, including the web, social platforms, and third-party news apps.Must have strong prioritization, organization, and communication skills.Must show ability to think ambitiously about multimedia storytelling and work with journalists across our newsroom to conceptualize and execute seamless presentations.At least some experience working with standard photo editing tools, including Photoshop.Fast learner able to quickly pick up new skills.
