Essential FunctionsJob SummaryThe Special Collections Librarian is responsible for the development, preservation, promotion and use of Special Collections' rare books collection, managing Special Collections' instruction program, and participating in outreach and fundraising initiatives.

Manages the Special Collections Instruction ProgramCollaborates with faculty to develop and conduct primary source instruction sessions and helps prepare course assignments using Special Collections materials.

Manages Rare Book CollectionSelects and acquires printed material for the rare books collection with particular attention to the Mexican Cookbook Collection.Manages collection budgets and funds.Monitors growth of rare books collection and performs stacks maintenance, space audits, inventory projects, and shifting of materials.Assesses the condition and preservation needs of individual items and makes recommendations for future preservation or conservation treatment.

Contributes to Outreach and Fundraising InitiativesPromotes rare books collection to a wide variety of constituents by giving public presentations, workshops, tours, and show and tells.Collaborates with colleagues in the library, and plans and participates in outreach activities such as pop-up exhibits, tabling, and events, many of which are after normal business hours and on weekends.In collaboration with the AVP for Special Collections fosters national and international relationships and partnerships to increase awareness of the Mexican Cookbook Collection.Works closely with the AVP for Special Collections and with Library Development in the stewardship of individual donors, including participating in meetings, events, and private shows and tells.

Provides ReferenceAnswers remote and in-person reference questions on rare books collection.Provides specialized reference assistance for the Mexican Cookbook Collection.Participates in reading room shifts and provides backup.Supervises student workers and interns.Performs other duties as assigned.

Required QualificationsALA Accredited Master's degree in Library Science.Experience working with rare books and archives.Experience conducting primary source instruction.Experience engaging a variety of audiences through public speaking in the form of presentations, workshops, and tours.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and speaking.Demonstrated evidence of strong commitment to customer service, community engagement, and teamwork.Experience utilizing library catalogs such as Alma/Primo, CONTENTdm (or similar platform), and EAD finding aids.Excellent written and oral communication skills.High level of initiative and self-motivation.Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders effectively.Exceptional organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills.Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish.

Preferred QualificationsBackground or additional degree in one of the following: Latin American Studies, Mexican American Studies, Spanish.Coursework in the principles and practices of rare books librarianship.One (1) year of full-time experience working in an academic special collection.One (1) year of full-time experience planning, delivering, and assessing primary source literacy instruction in an academic setting.Knowledge of basic book and paper preservation.Supervisory experience.Experience with rare book collection development and budget management.

Working ConditionsWork may include occasional exposure to book mold, dust, photographic chemicals, or insects.Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for events.Ability to drive to donor locations or other UTSA campuses to pack and transfer collections.

Physical Demands:Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.Exerts up to 40 lbs. of force to pack and lift boxes and materials.

This position will be primarily located

on campus . Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
