THE PORT OF LONG BEACH IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONSThis is an at-will positionSalary Range: $210,000 - $255,000 (DOE/DOQ)THE ROLEReporting to the Managing Director of Strategic Advocacy, the Director of Communications directs overall communications and media strategy and activities for the Port. The position brands and promotes the Port’s mission, goals and objectives to internal and external stakeholders and directs the implementation of strategic communications, video/technology, creative design, media relations, and special projects.THE TEAMThe primary objective of the Communications & Community Relations Division is to cultivate and bolster a positive perception of the Port. This involves fostering awareness and understanding of Port operations across diverse audiences, including the international maritime industry, port complex stakeholders, local and regional communities, as well as Port employees. The team is dedicated to delivering strategic communication services, refining messaging, managing media relations, elevating brand awareness and implementing community and educational programs. Responsibilities extend to addressing both anticipated and unforeseen communications challenges and opportunities.ABOUT USThe Port of Long Beach is a global leader in green port initiatives and top-notch customer service, moving cargo with reliability, speed and efficiency. During the next 10 years, the Port is planning $2.3 billion in capital improvements aimed at enhancing capacity, competitiveness and sustainability.EXAMPLES OF DUTIESThe following examples are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work performed by the Director. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, and skills required:Providing leadership and direction for the division that provides all communication and media services for the Port.Providing direct and indirect supervision of all communication staff, establishing goals and objectives, measuring performance, and ensuring an effective, customer-oriented service level.Developing branding, communications, marketing, media relations and community relations to promote the Port and its activities.Developing and overseeing a substantial trade and public advertising program.Executing and maintaining a comprehensive community outreach program.Managing proactive and responsive media relations.Directing external messaging to include responding to press inquiries, press releases, statements, and publications.Directing interviews and placements of stories, coordinating press conferences and media events for the Port on local, state, national and international levels.Representing the Port at public events, activities, and meetings.EDUCATION:Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Business Administration or closely related field is required.Master’s Degree in above fields is preferred.Experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the position's duties may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.EXPERIENCE:At least 10 years’ communication management experience managing a small to medium staff of creative talent dealing with graphic design, media, and community relations.Experience in or with the public sector and working with elected and/or appointed officials will be considered favorably.A background in journalism, marketing, and/or media relations and crisis communications for a high-profile organization or company is desired.Strong leadership background with experience as a number one or number two management professional in a complex, similarly situated organization or company with comparable challenge and structure is expected.HOW TO APPLY:

– $550.00 per monthExecutive Leave

– 40 hours per year.Retirement

– CalPERS 2% @ 62, coordinated with social security. Current member contribution is 8.00% for CalPERS, and 6.2% for social security, paid by the employee.Pay for Performance

– Pay for Performance is awarded based on employee performance as demonstrated through achievement of individual goals, demonstration of required competencies, and available budget funds.Group Health Insurance

– City-paid life insurance policy of $20,000 plus executive insurance benefit equal to three times annual salary up to a maximum of $500,000.Disability Insurance

– Vacation is accrued at equivalent of two weeks on an annual basis. Vacation can be used after six months of service.Sick Leave

– Accrued at 8 hours per month.Paid Parental Leave

– After six (6) months of City employment, the City pays up to 30 consecutive days (160 hours) for eligible employees to take paid time to bond with the child upon birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child, up to the age of 17.Holidays

– 11 scheduled holidays per calendar year and four (4) personal holidays.Education Reimbursement

– Tuition reimbursement allows employees to obtain additional education or training.Annual Physical

– Eligible to receive an annual physical examination at the city's expense through the city-provided program.Public Student Loan Forgiveness
