POSITION: Director of Marketing & Communications at the Memphis Medical District Collaborative (MMDC)

Organization Overview: Established in 2016, MMDC is a not-for-profit, community development organization committed to strengthening the communities between and around its anchor institutions – major healthcare and educational institutions – including ALSAC / St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Baptist Health Sciences University, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, Regional One Health, Shelby County Health Department, Southern College of Optometry, Southwest Tennessee Community College and University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Together, these institutions have more than 25,000 employees, 8,000 students, collective spend of $1.3 billion, and control more than 300 acres of real estate. The Memphis Medical District is also home to more than 10,000 residents. These institutions, along with local and national philanthropy, area corporations and collaborative community partners, support the work of MMDC to revitalize the Memphis Medical District, and make it a preferred destination to work, live, learn and visit.

MMDC Departments: MMDC’s approach is comprehensive and inclusive of residents, employees, students, and visitors to the district. In addition to connecting the dots across the major healthcare and educational institutions, MMDC also focuses on the following program portfolios:

Clean and Safe Streets & Public Spaces – Catalyzing connections between people and place through improvements to the public realm, including parks, streetscapes, sidewalks, plazas and enhanced mobility options. District Ambassador program; Coordination of safety efforts, hospitality assistance and environmental and cleanliness improvements.

Development – Fundraising, grant writing and management, and donor/partner cultivation and recognition.

Economic Development – Supporting and connecting the diverse neighborhoods in the District through growing and attracting small, minority and women-owned businesses, as well as supporting existing businesses through programs like Buy Local.

Marketing and Communications – Promoting organization’s mission, values and impact to various stakeholders through creatively telling the District’s and organization’s story.

Real Estate – Cultivating a rich environment for appropriate development through coordinated planning and investment, with a focus on creating mixed-use, mixed income places.

Workforce Strategies – Through Hire Local, connecting neighborhood residents to training, education, and employment opportunities where there is a clear career pathway, a livable wage and a growing career field.

Director of Marketing and Communications

Reports To: Vice President of Operations

Summary: We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Marketing and Communications Director to join our team at MMDC, one of Memphis Business Journal’s 2024 Best Places to Work. This role is pivotal in advancing our mission to foster vibrancy, prosperity and equity within the Medical District now and in the years to come.The Director of Marketing and Communications leads MMDC’s external communications, marketing, and engagement strategies across the organization to position and promote the Medical District (the place) and MMDC (the organization) in alignment with our strategic priorities and goals.

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of creativity, leadership, and strategic thinking to drive our marketing and communications efforts forward. He/she collaborates often with the President, VP and fellow department directors in key decisions and strategies to maximize our community impact.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

10+ years’ experience in marketing and/or communications

5+ years’ experience in media/creative production

5+ years’ experience in event planning and production

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and messages

Proven ability to successfully manage multiple projects, vendors, andtimelines.

Experience in brand management and media relations is highly desirable.

Creative problem-solving skills

Experience and ability to influence, connect, and collaborate with a wide variety of partners and audiences

Proficiency in analytics tools and metrics-driven decision-making.

Starting Salary: $80,000 – $90,000 commensurate with experience.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).

Lifting/moving supplies

Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or workstation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee organization-wide communications strategy and content across all platforms, (including website, email marketing, social media, PR/media, and advertising).

Develop and produce all MMDC and program collateral, including annual reports and promotional/fundraising materials, in collaboration with staff and vendors.

Actively collaborate with President, VP and development team on fundraising, planning, and reporting efforts.

Lead quarterly meetings and manage relationships and communications with anchor institutions’ marketing and communications teams to identify opportunities for increased engagement among institutions.

Actively collaborate with program teams to develop and support annual marketing/communications plans, share resources and opportunities, develop cross-functional opportunities in the District, and to ensure message alignment across the organization.

Utilize data analytics tools to gather, analyze, and interpret key organization and district data.

Make data-driven decisions to refine marketing and communication strategies to achieve desirable outcomes.

Organize, promote, and produce MMDC public events in collaboration with appropriate program teams and/or external community partners to increase connectivity to the District.

Design and deliver various events, including networking, fundraising and awareness events in collaboration with staff and key stakeholders as needed.

Oversee MMDC Event Sponsorship program in concert with other internal teams.

Lead the development and implementation of MMDC’s signage and public art projects in collaboration with external partners to build District awareness and branding.

Prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting materials as needed by senior leadership.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure coverage for the organization and strengthen the Medical District and MMDC brand locally and nationally.

Develop press releases, media kits, and other materials to enhance media visibility.

Identify key target audiences and devise strategies to engage them effective.
