August 25, 2024Position Summary:The Communications Specialist, reporting to the Manager of Research Communications, will be responsible for developing various strategic and operational communications materials (electronic, print, and other media) involving complex scientific information, health/medical research, strategic initiatives, and/or research operations within the Science & Research portfolio. These materials will include research stories, operational updates, newsletters, annual reports, videos, social media posts, internal briefing notes, and more; and will be for various audiences, including the public, the medical and scientific community, administrators, external partners, and leaders and executives.The Research Strategy department is responsible for supporting strategic planning and the implementation of strategic research initiatives; communicating research advancements, research impact, strategic priorities, operational updates, and more to internal and external audiences to increase knowledge of, collaboration with, and investment in the UHN research enterprise; developing corporate funding proposals; administering grant applications; and supporting the Office of the Executive Vice President, Science & Research. The individual will work collaboratively with peers in the department, with research teams, and with operational teams to support these various functions.This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with research experience who want to gain more experience in developing, strategically positioning, editing, and disseminating scientific documents for different audiences.Duties, Skills, and Capabilities:Outstanding writing, editing/proofreading, and verbal communication skills. Outstanding attention to detail.Experience in creating and tailoring content for diverse formats such as research stories, operational updates, newsletters, annual reports, social media posts, and internal briefings an asset.Excellent critical thinking skills. Demonstrated experience in analyzing and interpreting data.Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to exercise initiative, multi-task, prioritize different types of work with competing deadlines, and respond with agility.Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required.Proficiency in graphics software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc.) required.Proficiency in photography and videography equipment and editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Lightroom) an asset.Ability to create and edit engaging photographic and video content for various platforms including social media, websites, and internal communications an asset.Ability to design visually appealing graphics and infographics to accompany scientific and medical research communications an asset.Experience with multimedia content strategy an asset.Experience with event planning and management an asset.Ability to use good judgment and think strategically in complex situations.Compliance with confidentiality requirements.Ability to establish solid working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.Demonstrated experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders, potentially with competing interests, to deliver high-quality communications products.Excellent client service skills, with the ability to effectively work in a diverse environment and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds, and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand.Minimum Qualifications:Completion of a Master’s degree in a science or health science–related discipline or recognized equivalent (biomedical sciences preferred), or mix of health science education and experience required.Two (2) years practical experience in academic research laboratories and scientific writing (e.g., research manuscripts, proposals, etc.) required.In addition to working alongside some of the most talented and inspiring healthcare professionals in the world, UHN offers a wide range of benefits, programs and perks.
