About the Organization

Covering over 1,800 square miles, Desert Recreation District (DRD) provides recreational services to more than 380,000 residents throughout the Greater Coachella Valley. We work with municipalities in a collective effort to assure equitable service delivery to every community regardless of economic means. The District boundary has expanded in recent years to provide barrier-free, safe service to more unincorporated areas of the Coachella Valley and municipalities not previously served.

DRD is responsible for over 30 recreational facilities that include community and fitness centers, sports fields, swimming pools, a golf course and driving range, and various parks and open spaces. In addition, DRD creates and delivers quality programs, services and classes; and, facilitates leisure opportunities through partnerships that encourage residents to engage in healthy lifestyles and wellness activities. In the past year we have offered over 2,800 classes and programs, and more than 200 special events.

Under general direction, plans, schedules, assigns, reviews, supervises, and participates in the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of duties in support of strategic internal and external marketing and community relations initiatives, programs, and activities; creates content and prepares informational materials for dissemination to the public through a variety of channels including the District’s website, social media, and activity guides; coordinates, attends and participates in community events to market and publicize the District’s programs and services; provides complex and responsible support to management in areas of expertise; and performs related work as required.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives general direction from the Community Services Director. Exercises direct supervision over technical staff.CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a full supervisory-level class that exercises independent judgment on diverse and specialized marketing and community relations activities with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work. Incumbents are responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of staff and for providing technical support to management in a variety of areas. Performance of the work requires the use of independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines.Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff responsible for marketing and community relations activities to promote the District, programs, and services; trains staff in work procedures; evaluates employee performance, counsels employees, and effectively recommends initial disciplinary action; assists in selection and promotion.Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for assigned services and programs; recommends and implements policies and procedures including standard operating procedures for assigned operations.Develops information and marketing material to promote the District's image, programs, and activities; coordinates the distribution of such information and communications through a variety of avenues, including print, web, social media, and community events.Identifies marketing opportunities and develops promotional campaign budgets, themes and schedules; develops cost analysis for assigned marketing and promotional projects and recommends project scheduling priorities.Creates, edits, and updates the District’s thrice annual Activity and Program Guide; extracts, consolidates, formats, reviews, researches and reconciles program and activity information from registration software, and internal and external sources; oversees the review process to ensure the accuracy of advertised activities and events; creates messaging and ad content to supplement activities; and ensure cohesion of guide content and graphics for public distribution.Gathers information and writes news stories, feature articles, special articles, scripts and reports, which describe and highlight District activities including key events such as current programs and activities, District accomplishments, employment opportunities, and openings of new parks and community centers.Coordinates and monitors the District's social media presence; ensures social media communications are consistent with established style, voice, and branding protocols; develops content and responses for the District's social media accounts; tracks references to the District on social media.Assists representatives of the community and news media in obtaining information and materials on District activities and programs.Designs and lays out materials for magazines, brochures and other publications; edits and revises materials for publication; assists with updating and maintaining content on web pages, social media and mobile devices.Develops and implements the District’s marketing plan; participates in branding initiatives, marketing campaigns, and the creation of marketing/branding materials.Promotes awareness of District goals, projects, and programs through targeted community events, publications, graphics, and other media.Prepares business documents and reports; researches, compiles, and organizes information and data for specialized reports; and presents report findings.Maintains files, databases, and records related to District marketing and community relations; Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.When working in an external environment, position requires sitting, standing, walking on slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stopping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties.
