Music Director

Anglican Church in North America, Largo, Florida, United States, 34640

About St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church

St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church is a loving and welcoming parish in Largo, FL (20 miles west of Tampa). Rooted in the Anglican tradition, we are committed to nurturing a community of faith, hope, and love. We exist to see the world, especially the communities in which we live, work, and worship, filled with disciples of Jesus Christ. We are a liturgical church, and we believe that liturgy is innately connected to the whole life and mission of the parish.

We are members of the Diocese of Quincy in the Anglican Church in North America, and our services follow the liturgy of the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. Each Sunday, we have one spoken service (8:00 a.m.) and one with music and heartfelt congregational singing (10:30 a.m.). The music in this latter service intentionally combines musical styles from the hymnbook tradition and contemporary worship music so that we are drawing from the best of the past and the present as we seek to glorify God through the worship of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Position Description

The Music Director, in partnership with the Rector, will lead our music ministry and enhance our worship experience through the power of music. The Music Director will plan, coordinate, and direct music for our worship services, choirs, and special events.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will focus on cultivating a healthy culture of worship through music in our church. With the support of the Rector, the Music Director will ensure that the church’s vision is implemented at every level of the worship ministry, maintaining theological, musical, and pastoral consistency. The primary areas of responsibility for this position are:

1. Musical Leadership

The Music Director will be this parish’s principal musician and will oversee music for all worship services with a musical component. All Sunday worship and other principal services typically include a prelude, service music, hymns, contemporary worship songs, and a postlude.

The Music Director will lead our music team, which may include volunteer and paid musicians, and recruit and audition additional musicians to assist in our worship through music. The Music Director will rehearse the music for any service with the music team before the service’s date.

The Music Director will select hymns, contemporary worship songs, service music, and other music for Sunday services and special liturgical events. These selections will be entered into Planning Center and Proclaim no later than five days before the day of the service. For a Sunday service, the selections will be entered into Planning Center and Proclaim before the church office opens Wednesday morning. The lyrics will be entered into Proclaim in the exact order they will be sung. The Music Director is responsible for ensuring the songs and slides are in Proclaim and in the proper order as part of the rehearsal.

2. The Choir

The Music Director will give significant attention to maintaining and growing our choir. This individual will direct and conduct the church choir, ensuring high-quality musical performances that inspire and uplift the congregation. If this is not a skill the Music Director possesses, they will work with the Rector and Vestry to hire an associate to fulfill this task. The choir will sing at least once a month from September through May and take a break during the Summer. The Music Director will communicate clearly with the choir about rehearsal and performance dates and times.

3. Special Events and Ministries

The Music Director will oversee music for special events (such as funerals and weddings) and principal services, including but not limited to:

Ash Wednesday

Maundy Thursday

Good Friday

The Great Vigil of Easter

Ascension Day

The Day of Pentecost

Trinity Sunday

All Saints’ Day

Christmas Eve

The Epiphany

4. Administrative Support

The Music Director will plan and manage the music budget, including the purchase and maintenance of musical instruments and resources. This individual will also coordinate with church staff and volunteers to schedule rehearsals, performances, and special music events. The Music Director will also be responsible for check requests for paid musicians, instrument maintenance and tuning, the organization of worship and storage spaces, and long-range planning. Issues with music or the music team, especially as they relate to the job of the Music Director, are to be addressed solely to the Rector for resolution.

To help fulfill these responsibilities, the Music Director will establish annual goals in consultation with the Rector and attend a weekly staff meeting (typically Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday for up to one hour between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.) and the monthly Ministry Coordinators meeting (the first Friday of every month at 10:00 a.m.). The Music Director will be encouraged to participate in the spiritual life of the parish outside of their specific ministry. The Music Director is expected to participate in all aspects of any service they attend, and not only when music is being played.
