Job Title: Director of Music and Organist Job Summary:

Peace Presbyterian Church, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, is seeking a Director of Music and Organist.

Peace is a growing, intergenerational congregation of 350 participants, celebrating 15 years of joyful and energized ministry this fall. Music has been an integral part of the life of the church’s development as we have been committed to a diversity of musical styles, not dividing into contemporary and traditional worship services. The congregation of 200 worshippers in person and 40 households online enjoys hearing organ and piano, guitar and djembe, flute and harp, violin and cello, bells and trumpet. We value classical music, old and new hymns, spirituals, gospel, folk, jazz, global, and contemporary pieces. At times, Peace has had as many as five musical groups and in 2024, the choir is 30 members strong with a bell choir of eight ready to be engaged. Youth instrumentalists (all levels) and children’s music are valued by the congregation, as well as occasional paid professional soloists or instrumentalists.

With a program and pastoral staff of six persons, this church’s mission is to make God known by growing as disciples of Jesus Christ, building a community of peace, and caring for the needs of others. Most people in the congregation remember the mission because it was put to song and can be sung in a round. We are an open and affirming congregation that values compassionate care of participants, while also engaging in mission and social justice in the community. We connect with neighbors via our concert series, which includes several concerts each year by the Lakewood Ranch Wind Ensemble and through events (some of them musical or artistic) in the Peaceful Path, a whimsical, flowered walking path in the natural woods of the church property.

Speaking of beauty, SW Florida is a glorious place to live. With Sarasota and Bradenton thirty minutes away, there are beautiful beaches and plenty of entertainment in the arts, music, and theatre community, plus many delicious restaurants to enjoy. From November to April, northerners flock to this area, and often go to church, the concert series, and our Peaceful Path events. Sometimes, they even join the choir!

Peace is a weekly Eucharist church which offers lively traditional services using the Glory to God Hymnal. Services are held in a comfortable and attractive 2018 sanctuary enhanced by the installation of an ALLEN organ GENISYS G340 (Three Manuals, 58 Stops with GeniSys Voices) organ. There are two grand pianos, 3 octaves of handbells, 2 octaves of tone chimes, and 20 djembes available for use. Four retired music directors are members of the church and are readily available to support.

The Director of Music and Organist oversees all aspects of the music life of the congregation, as well as cooperating in the outreach of the church to the community. The Director of Music and Organist is accountable to the Pastor, Head of Staff, and resources the Worship & Music Team and collaborates with the Outreach Team.
