DescriptionChronicle Books is looking for a Senior Designer who will be responsible for creating the visually distinctive books and gifts that sets us apart. Senior Designers manage multiple projects simultaneously, developing innovative and profitable titles through robust collaboration with in-house colleagues and outside talent. They guide projects from conception through manufacture for all interior to exterior book and gift elements. They will also engage in Chronicle’s internal design department to grow skills and amplify creativity.The Senior Designer will direct, manage, and design a range of book and gift titles including, but not limited to, licensed publishing (i.e. Disney, Lucas, Marvel, DC Comics, Studio Ghibli), humor, sex, pets, music, memes, and various other pop culture subjects. They will scout for, negotiate with, and oversee outside designers, they will collaborate with Editorial, Production, and Marketing team members and they will connect with the outside creative community. In addition, they will be expected to help develop and implement a vision and strategy for the Entertainment book and gift lists, while also originating and developing new ideas and new formats for publication. Lastly, they will create materials for book/gift projects that fulfill Chronicle Book’s Sales and Marketing needs, inclusive of industry and trade shows (i.e. London and Frankfurt Book Fairs).Employees at Chronicle Books follow a flexible hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week and up to 4 days per week in our San Francisco office, depending on project and business needs. Please note that this job description is not designed to cover all the activities required of the employee.Hiring Salary Range - $78,000/yr - $89,700/yr. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including but not limited to: applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Also required will be portfolio pieces that demonstrate a passion and sensibility for pop culture, robust expertise with offset printing/proofing, experience hiring and art directing illustrators, photographers, designers, and typesetters. Experience in a Macintosh environment and a command of Adobe InDesign, as well as a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel are also needed. In addition, candidates should possess strong organizational/communication skills, adeptness in teamwork and collaboration with an ability to mediate and negotiate with peers and outside design resources. Experience with brand licensors and experience with, or curiosity in, packaging and products is a plus.
