BASIC PURPOSEThe Music Instructor provides a nurturing and safe environment for individuals to embark on a journey of music and instrument learning. With a focus on elementary students and youth, the instructor conducts group lessons under the guidance of Corps Officers and the Education Center Supervisor. This ensures that students have a secure and loving space to discover the joys of music. The Education Center, which is a part of The Salvation Army / Oakland Chinatown Corps, operates as an all-embracing outreach program, welcoming people from diverse cultures, ethnicities, and age groups in the community.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPlan and prepare lessons according to the curriculum objectives. Instruction will cover music theory, harmony, score, sight-reading, composition, and music appreciation.Be able to provide instruction to children by demonstration of playing various musical instruments, such as but not limited to piano, drums, or guitar and leading children/youth choirs.Conduct regular assessments of students' musical skills and provide feedback on areas that require improvements. Keep track of all students progress through the music program.Prepare students for performances and concerts.Create and maintain an engaging and effective learning environment where students can flourish and develop their musical abilities.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTSExperience teaching music or other related courses to elementary age students.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Patience and resilience in handling challenging students.Strong organizational skills.Motivate students to learn.Bilingual in English and Chinese preferred.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONSMust have a bachelor's degree (or higher) in music education or a related field.Must be at least 21 years old.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis.Ability to grasp, push, and/or pull objects.Ability to reach overhead.Ability to lift to 25 lbs. for administrative positions.Ability to operate a computer.Ability to process written, visual, and/or verbal information.Ability to operate basic office equipment and tools PC, Telephone, Copier, Printer.
