The Savannah Country Day School, located Savannah, Georgia is seeking a Lower School Media Specialist. The Lower School Media Specialist reports to the Head of Lower School and is responsible for leading and directing all facets of the lower school library media center. The successful candidate will have a passion for and experience in working in an early childhood/elementary environment that nurtures students’ love for reading through developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the important role literacy plays in the social and emotional development and academic growth of the youngest learners within our school.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

· Supervising the production lab and daily morning announcement broadcasts

· Maintaining the media center computer lab

· Designing and implementing the summer reading program

· Providing skills instruction for students through scheduled media classes and flexible scheduling in classrooms

· Working with and assigning duties to the library assistants

· Assisting lower school faculty with the integration of literacy skills across the curriculum

Along with a familiarity with a variety of authors, illustrators, and genres, we strive to ensure that our students are able to locate, access, evaluate, organize, create and present information in a variety of print and digital formats. The Lower School Media Specialist provides experiences and skills instruction including reading enrichment and encouragement, comprehension, exposure to different genres of literature, evaluating books for content, illustrations, and appeal, reinforcing parts of a book, library arrangement, using the online catalog to locate information, using print and digital resources, and understanding the research process. Digital literacy skills taught include basic equipment operation, digital citizenship, creating with technology, communication, collaboration, accessing and organizing information, and critical thinking/problem solving.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university required.

· Master’s degree in Media Specialist, Library Science, or comparable field strongly preferred.

· Three (3) or more years of teaching experience desired.

· Current Media Specialist state teaching license preferred.

Other Desirable Skills and Experience:

· Positive attitude and commitment to collaborating with others.

· Strong classroom management skills, appropriate for early childhood students.

· Understanding of curriculum and ability to plan instruction and assess learning outcomes.

· Knowledgeable on current research related to early childhood literacy.

Physical Demands

Work is typically performed in a classroom/library environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings. The employee occasionally lifts or carries objects of a light-medium weight, up to 25 pounds. Full range of hand and finger motion may be utilized for data entry purposes.
