Open Postdoc and PhD positions, Biofilm in Porous Media and Bioremediation

Job Type:

Post-DocJob Rank:

Post-docJob Institution:

University of MassachusettesJob Description:

Prof. Sang Hyun Lee’s lab ( sanghlee.com ) at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst in Microbiology Department is looking for a postdoc and a Ph.D. student in the area of biofilm formation and microbial transport in porous media and fungi enhanced bioremediation. The postdoc position is available for Fall 2024 and the PhD position is available for Fall 2025. The positions are fully funded with competitive salary and benefits. What we do:

In the Biofluids Laboratory, we explore the dynamics of microbe-fluid interactions across diverse systems using tools such as microfluidics, molecular biology, and numerical simulations to enhance our understanding of these interactions and develop biotechnologies.Research Focus Areas:

Biofilm formation in porous media: Investigating how flow dynamics and channel geometry affect biofilm growth to advance biofilm control technologies.Bioremediation: Studying how microbes interact with oil contaminants in subsurface pore spaces to develop innovative technologies like bioremediation and oil recovery.Who are we looking for & how to apply:

Successful candidates should have a degree in microbiology, environmental/bio-engineering, or a related field. A strong background in microfluidics and fluid mechanics is preferred, and experience in coding and numerical simulation is encouraged. Interested candidates should email Dr. Lee ( sanghyunlee@umass.edu ) with a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and contact info of two references.
