The Communications Specialist plays a key role in developing content and implementing communications strategies that engage a variety of audiences. A strong writer with a keen understanding of digital communication, this professional will report to the Communications Manager and work closely with multiple departments to support organizational goals.A successful Communications Specialist will enjoy working in a fast-moving, collaborative culture. The ideal candidate will be able to prioritize multiple tasks, craft clear and engaging communications that explain complex information, capture and tell compelling stories, integrate feedback into work, and manage communications plans through completion.Execute effective communications strategies in coordination with External Affairs team to engage internal and external audiences, including:Rider Communications:

Coordinate, write and implement communications necessary to ensure riders are aware of critical information that affects their experiences with DART, such as service changes, weather delays, events, transit planning and more.

Public Input:

Support in developing and carrying out public outreach plans in accordance with DART’s public participation plan and Title VI program. Help organize and host public input activities.

Internal Communications:

Coordinate, write and edit communications (e.g., staff emails, intranet notices, flyers, and leadership team memos) that share information and engage staff in organizational priorities.

Stakeholder Communications:

Support in implementing a communications plan that elevates public transit as an essential service and economic driver for the region. Develop and implement communications for partners.

Identify, develop and share content that educates on the value of public transportation and DART’s impact in the central Iowa region:Research and develop blogs, articles, and documents that answer commonly asked questions and educate on topics of interest to audiences.

Interview riders and community partners and craft stories that highlight the value of DART and its services.

Manage a content calendar and integrate content into website, newsletters, social media, and other channels.

Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications team members to manage DART’s social media presence, including research and develop a social media strategy, write engaging content, and monitor and respond to questions and comments.

Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications team members to manage platforms, including website, email system and app.

Manage email lists and manage vendor and internal relationships necessary to implement communications strategies.Collect and analyze data to determine effectiveness of communications plans and tactics.

Support with administrative tasks, such as schedule inventory, materials ordering, and event logistics.Education and/or Experience:Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent education and/or experience) from an accredited college or university in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or a related field.Minimum of two years’ experience in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing or a related field.Knowledge, Competencies, and Interpersonal Skills:Strong writing skills with ability to adapt tone and message for audiences and channels.Hands-on experience interviewing and crafting stories and blogs.Experience managing and executing communications plans.Demonstrated project management skills.Knowledge of and experience managing digital communication platforms.Ability to think creatively and critically.Keen attention to detail, especially when proofreading.Take initiative in offering ideas and carrying out projects.Ability to manage time with multiple priorities and problem solve when challenges arise.Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel and PowerPointPhysical Demands:Some periods of prolonged standing while staffing or attending various organizational activities and events.Some lifting is required during special events or projects and in maintaining collateral and other supplies.Most of the work is performed in an open office environment.
